Sumedh Rajendran’s evocative work is deeply committed to the larger social implications of art.

VNB_Sumedh_Rajendran copyFrom Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi, and multiple cities in between, artist and sculptor Sumedh Rajendran’s art has made a mark with its intensity, topicality and artistry. Born to artist parents, Sumedh took to art after realizing how much he enjoyed working in his father’s studio. He pursued his BFA (sculpture) from the College of Arts, Thiruvanathapuram (1994) and did his MFA degree from the Delhi College of Arts (1999). His move to the Capital changed his perspective in a big way — his earlier works captured feelings of alienation and belongingness; later on, his works became a protest against trends and topics that agonized him. Issues of displacement, consumerism, urban violence and racial discrimination are the subjects of his collages, installations and sculptures. Sumedh sharpens this political critique with an interesting deployment of unconventional materials like ceramic tiles, leather, perforated iron, etc where the choice of material is often guided by the social context it can allude to. His solo exhibitions include Dual Liquid at Vadehra Gallery, New Delhi (2010); Chemical Smuggle at Grosvenor Vadehra, London (2008) and others.
