An American expatriate living in India recently shed light on a unique cultural experience she has encountered: taking her toddler to pubs after preschool. Dana Marie, who shared her experience in a video on Instagram, discussed how pubs in Bengaluru offer environments far removed from those typically associated with alcohol consumption in other countries.
Marie highlighted how pubs in the city cater to non-drinkers with comprehensive non-alcoholic options such as mocktails and fresh juices, making them a suitable destination for family visits. “For non-drinkers like myself, and for my children, there are always mocktails and fresh juices on offer,” she explained, further noting the child-friendly atmosphere in these venues.
One such pub featured in her video boasts open-air settings with fish ponds, providing a source of entertainment for her young child. According to social media users in the comments section, the place was called Oia. This setting, according to Marie, is common in Bengaluru, where many pubs are designed as open-air spaces and prohibit smoking. These factors contribute to a family-friendly environment where parents can bring their children during the day.
Marie also emphasised that Bengaluru pubs are often more than just places for alcohol consumption. Some venues, she revealed, even host children’s activities on weekends, with birthday parties being held in such establishments. However, she clarified that she would not take her children to pubs at night.
Public response to her observations was largely positive, with many agreeing that pubs in Bengaluru differ significantly from their counterparts in other parts of the world. “I’ve seen a lot of kids at breweries in the evenings here,” noted one Instagram user, adding that pubs in Bengaluru function more like restaurants. Another commented, “I’ve taken my 2-year-old here. He absolutely loved it too. The vibe in Bangalore is irreplaceable.”
