A video allegedly showing a couple dumping garbage on a roadside in Canada has triggered widespread outrage on social media, with the clip’s caption blaming Indians for their lack of civic responsibility. Although the nationality of the individuals has not been officially confirmed, the post has reignited debates around public conduct and stereotypes associated with Indian diaspora communities.
The footage, which went viral after being posted on X (formerly Twitter), captured a man and a woman removing large polythene bags from their vehicle. The video showed the duo discarding the contents of the bags along a roadside—though notably, they returned the empty bags to their car after emptying them.
The caption accompanying the video accused Indians of carrying their poor civic habits abroad, stating they had “already destroyed India.” The strong language used in the caption immediately polarised online viewers and sparked intense debate about the ethics of generalising an entire nationality based on individual actions.
They’ve destroyed India. We can’t let them destroy Canada next.— Bruce (@bruce_barrett) July 13, 2025
One user, seemingly enraged by the footage, wrote: “Report it to cops & they should be fined—you can see the licence plate.” Another commenter demanded legal action: “Are they mad? Why can’t they throw the same in a dustbin? Someone should catch them and hand them over to the police. They should not leave unless they pay a heavy penalty.”
Others shared similar sentiments, expressing embarrassment and disappointment at how the video could tarnish India’s global image. “This is why we face discrimination abroad. It’s not racism, it’s our behaviour,” read one post. Another wrote, “Stop exporting nonsense. We need better civic sense and basic decency.”
However, not all reactions were condemnatory. A section of users came to the couple’s defence, offering alternative interpretations of the video. One individual commented, “They might have been throwing food for wildlife and took the bags back. Please don’t generalise.” Another echoed the sentiment, adding: “Could they be feeding birds or animals? Or perhaps offering flowers after a ritual? Does anyone know the area and what exists at that spot? Because they didn’t throw the plastic bags—they kept them.”

Meanwhile, a user defended the couple and claimed they might be disposing off biodegradable items like pooja flowers and camphor.
Look carefully, she is only disposing off biodegradable pooja item (flowers, garlands, camphor etc) and doesn’t throw the plastic bag itself. This is not littering.Hindu psyche doesnt allow to throw pooja items in dustbin. Everyone who’s hating on her is restarted. https://t.co/6o01UqkhNn
Indeed disgusting act.
But that could be a Pakistani or Bangladeshi or Srilankan or Nepali or Indian woman. They all look alike. How did you conclude she is Indian? https://t.co/pZhZVIpTm5
Several users also questioned the assumption of the couple’s nationality, cautioning against stereotyping. “What’s the proof that they’re Indians? They could be Pakistani, Bangladeshi, or Nepalese. They look exactly like us, but you don’t have any proof that they are Indians,” one user pointed out.
An X account responded to the original poster, stating: “Blaming an entire nation for littering is unfair and unhelpful. Cleanliness is about civic responsibility, not nationality. Yes, some people lack civic sense, and Indians are also tired of them.”
