Why this Swedish minister has banned bananas on official visits. It's a phobia

The phobia, clinically referred to as bananaphobia, is rare but can cause severe symptoms, including nausea and anxiety.

Sweden’s Gender Equality Minister, Paulina Brandberg, has garnered attention for her unusual phobia of bananas, prompting specific protocols to be followed during her official visits. Leaked emails obtained by Expressen, a Swedish news outlet, revealed that her staff requested the removal of bananas from event venues, citing what was described as a "strong allergy."

Brandberg clarified the issue in response to Expressen, explaining that the condition is not an allergy but a phobia. She described it as "a sort of allergy" that has a significant impact on her well-being, adding that she is undergoing professional treatment for it. In 2020, Brandberg had candidly posted about her condition on X (formerly Twitter), calling it the "world’s weirdest phobia of bananas." These posts have since been deleted.

The phobia, clinically referred to as bananaphobia, is rare but can cause severe symptoms, including nausea and anxiety, when individuals encounter the fruit. Such reactions are triggered by visual or olfactory exposure and are often rooted in childhood experiences, though specific causes can be challenging to determine.

The leaked emails reportedly highlighted requests made for events, including a VIP lunch, asking for premises to be banana-free. The correspondence framed the issue as an allergy, likely to simplify understanding for event organisers.

Brandberg is not alone in this rare condition. Teresa Carvalho, a Social Democratic MP and legal policy spokesperson, revealed that she also suffers from bananaphobia. Carvalho expressed solidarity with Brandberg on X, stating, “We may have had many tough debates about working conditions, but on this issue, we stand united against a common enemy.”

Bananaphobia: An overview

Bananaphobia is a rare and specific phobia characterised by an intense fear or aversion to bananas. Individuals with this condition may experience severe discomfort, anxiety, or even nausea when exposed to bananas, whether through sight, smell, or the thought of consuming the fruit.

Possible causes:

The phobia is often rooted in negative childhood experiences, such as an unpleasant incident involving bananas, or sensory aversion to their texture, taste, or smell. While the exact cause can vary, these early experiences may imprint a strong emotional reaction, triggering the phobia.

Symptoms:

Physical reactions: Sweating, nausea, or rapid heartbeat upon encountering bananas.

Emotional responses: Overwhelming feelings of fear or distress, which can escalate into a panic attack.

Behavioural changes: Avoiding places or situations where bananas might be present.

Management and treatment:

Like other specific phobias, bananaphobia can be managed through various psychological interventions:

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): Helps individuals reframe negative thought patterns associated with bananas.

Exposure therapy: Gradual, controlled exposure to the source of fear to desensitise the individual.

Relaxation techniques: Breathing exercises and mindfulness to reduce anxiety responses.
