Passenger fined for urinating in a cup during delay in deplaning: 'No mistaking what the sound was'

A male passenger was fined for urinating inside a cup during a delay in deplaning and later spilling it on a flight attendant while exiting the aircraft, a stuff.co.nz report said.

The incident took place in December last year on an Air New Zealand Auckland-Sydney flight and the 53-year-old man was fined 600 Australian dollars for his behaviour, officials said on Friday.

According to the report, one of the passengers named Holly, who was flying with her 15-year-old daughter and was seated on the same row as the man, had reported the behaviour to the airline crew after hearing him urinate in the cup.

"We heard him do it (urinate). There was no mistaking what the sound was and I just looked straight at my daughter and my daughter looked straight at me. It was very obvious what was happening," the woman said.

The passenger said that the plane had been on the tarmac for approximately 20 minutes while waiting for a terminal gate to be allocated when she heard the man relieve himself in a cup. The woman revealed that the passenger was in a drunk state and spilled urine on a flight attendant after tripping at the end of the plane.

"And because I guess we had moved he then got up after us and was carrying another full cup. I guess his intention was to pour it out in the toilet. Then as he was walking, he was obviously quite drunk by this point, he spilled a good amount of his urine onto the flight attendant at the end of the plane as well, because he tripped," she said.

The woman said that the incident had left her daughter scarred and she was afraid to travel alone, following the incident. "My daughter won't fly alone because she's absolutely terrified that she's not safe," she said.

This, however, is not the first instance of a passenger urinating inside an aircraft. In April 2023, a drunk passenger was arrested after he had allegedly urinated on a co-passenger on an American Airlines Delhi-New York flight.
