K-Pop fan war turns ugly as Koreans mock ‘Indian‑style’ eyes in online clash, Indians hit back

While the main clash unfolded between Korean and Southeast Asian social media users, Indian users found themselves dragged into the crossfire as racism on K‑pop Twitter resurfaced.

A six-day concert in Kuala Lumpur on 31 January became the unlikely spark for a region‑wide online conflict after a South Korean fansite master was accused of bringing prohibited long‑lens camera equipment into the venue. Fansite masters are dedicated K-pop fans who run a website or social media account, capturing high-quality photos and videos of idols at public events, and concerts. Malaysian concertgoers shared the incident online, prompting a wave of hostile reactions from South Korean K‑pop fans who escalated the matter into a racial broadside against Southeast Asians, including Indians.

According to Malaysia’s The Rakyat Post, South Korean netizens began circulating derogatory posts mocking Southeast Asians—ranging from images of women walking through rice fields captioned with jibes about poverty to ape imagery weaponised as a racial insult. Malaysians quickly hit back, soon joined by Indonesians, Thais, and Vietnamese users who criticised what they viewed as Korean online superiority complexes.

The matter escalated further when a Korean X user shamed "Indian-style" eyes.

"No one wants thick, masculine, Indian-style double eyelids like you. East Asians prefer thin, double eyelids in the East Asian style. Also, know your noses are very low, flat, and ugly, which is why your people get so much nose plastic surgery and skin color surgery," the Korean user said, prompting the Indian diaspora to step into the ring.

The Indian angle: Racism resurfaces on X

While the main clash unfolded between Korean and SEA users, Indian social media users found themselves dragged into the crossfire as racism on K‑pop resurfaced. Documented discussions on X and Reddit show that anti‑Indian stereotypes—ranging from mockery of skin tone to the widespread use of slurs like “Pajeet”—remain normalised on parts of the platform, including within K‑pop‑adjacent spaces.

South Korea records highest number of plastic surgeries in the world

The trolling prompted other Southeast Asian users to point out that while Koreans have been bullying others on physical appearances, South Korea is considered the plastic surgery capital of the world, with the highest rate of cosmetic procedures per capita, driven by intense beauty standards, and K-pop influence.

According to The Straits Times, the country has the highest per capita plastic surgery rate in the world, at 8.9 per 1,000 people, as per 2021 data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The overall industry is estimated to be worth well over $10 billion.

Last year, almost a million foreign nationals reportedly visited the city for medical procedures, with 64.2 per cent of medical spending directed towards cosmetic surgeries.

South East Asian countries push back collectively

Apart from the concert incident and the attack on physical appearances, another incident had made Malaysians furious with Korean social media users.

"Recently an Indonesian pop girl group called 'no na' has been on the rise, and some Korean on X insulted SEA for "stealing Kpop" and being poor, not having the budget therefore have to film their music video in a 'filthy' rice field. obviously SEAsians are angry about this statement and there's an ongoing huge fight," explained a Reddit user. Others added that South Koreans had also made fun of the English lyrics used in the song.

As the fight intensified, some Indonesian users even escalated complaints to immigration authorities, calling for certain Korean individuals to be blacklisted from entering the country.
