A couple was caught on camera engaging in sexual activity inside a mortuary freezer room in Noida, with a corpse lying mere feet away, in a disturbing case that led to the arrest of three employees. The episode, which has raised questions about security and management at the facility, has also led to the formation of an inquiry committee by the health department, Times of India reported.
The incident, believed to have occurred about a month ago, came to light after a video surfaced on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The footage shows the couple inside the freezer room of the mortuary, located in Sector 94, Noida. The video, recorded by one of the mortuary staff, has since gone viral.
Sher Singh, a sweeper employed at the mortuary, was identified as the man in the video and was arrested on Thursday. Two other employees, Parvendra, who recorded the video, and Bhanu, who was present at the scene, were also taken into custody, Times of India reported.
Noida’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Sunil Sharma, acknowledged the severity of the situation, and called for immediate corrective measures. "What was the guard doing at that time? The mortuary also has on duty a supervisor, a doctor, and a pharmacist on rotation. We will request the Noida administration to deploy more security guards at the post-mortem house. We also plan to install CCTV cameras there soon," Sharma told TOI.
In response to the incident, the CMO's office filed a formal complaint at the Sector 126 police station, leading to the arrests under charges including Section 296 of the Indian Penal Code, which penalises obscene acts in public places, and Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, relating to the transmission of explicit material.
The health department has terminated Sher Singh’s employment, and a three-member inquiry committee has been established to investigate the incident. The committee includes deputy CMOs Dr. Jaisalal and Dr. R.P. Singh, along with Dr. Rishabh Kumar Singh, a forensic expert at District Joint Hospital. Dr. Jaisalal, who is also in charge of the post-mortem house, will lead the probe.
The police are continuing their investigation to determine whether more videos were recorded at the mortuary.
