A family court in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, witnessed an unusual alimony payment when a 37-year-old man, directed to pay interim maintenance to his estranged wife, brought Rs 80,000 in coins. The incident, which occurred at the Additional Family Court on Wednesday, has since gone viral.
The man, a call taxi driver and owner, was instructed by the court to pay Rs 2 lakh in interim maintenance to his wife. In compliance with the directive, he arrived at the court carrying two white bags filled with Rs 2 and Rs 1 coins, amounting to Rs 80,000. A video widely circulated on social media captured him leaving the court building with the bags and placing them into a car after submitting the coins.
Upon receiving the payment, the presiding judge instructed the man to replace the coins with currency notes, citing practicality issues. On Thursday, he complied with the court's order and returned with the sum in notes. The judge also reminded him to pay the remaining Rs 1.2 lakh as part of the maintenance settlement at the earliest.
Meanwhile, This incident draws parallels to a recent case in Bengaluru involving a techie named Atul Subhash. Subhash, a 34-year-old senior executive, tragically died by suicide, leaving behind a 24-page note and an 80-minute video. In these, he accused his estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family of harassment and extortion, alleging they demanded substantial sums to settle legal disputes. Following his death, Singhania and her family were arrested on charges of abetment to suicide.
