Choti Holi also known as Holika Dahan is a vibrant and joyous festival celebrated by people across India, a day before the big festival of Holi. Both days hold deep cultural and religious significance, bringing communities together in a colourful celebration of the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring. This year, Holi falls on March 25, and on March 24 people will gather to celebrate Holika Dahan. According to Drik Panchang, the muhurat for Holika Dahan begins at 11:13 pm on March 24 and continues until 12:27 am on March 25.
Significance
Choti Holi and Holika Dahan mark the onset of spring and the season of new beginnings. The festival is also a time for communities to come together and spread joy. It is believed that the bonfire lit during Holika Dahan purifies the atmosphere and signifies a new dawn. The colourful festivities of Holi, which follow Holika Dahan, are a celebration of goodness and the vibrant hues of spring.
The origins of Holika Dahan are rooted in ancient Hindu mythology. According to legends, there was once a powerful demon king named Hiranyakashipu who sought to be immortal. He had a son named Prahlad who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, much to the dismay of his father who wanted to be worshipped as a god. Hiranyakashipu's sister, Holika, was granted a boon that made her immune to fire. To get rid of Prahlad, the demon king ordered Holika to sit in a fire with Prahlad on her lap. However, with the grace of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad stayed safe while Holika was burnt to ashes. This event symbolises the victory of good over evil, which is celebrated during Holika Dahan.
How to celebrate
Holika Dahan is usually celebrated on the eve of Holi. People gather wood and dried leaves to build a bonfire in public spaces or within their communities. Before lighting the fire, prayers are offered to seek blessings for the well-being and prosperity of all. Sculptures of Holika, representing evil, are often placed atop the fire and set ablaze. As the flames rise high, people sing and dance around the fire, spreading warmth and cheer.
On the day of Holi, people celebrate with colours and by meeting friends and family.
