'Accidental' love story: Chinese woman gets into car accident, suffers fracture, marries driver

A car accident has turned into an unlikely cupid and brought a couple together in China. They "met" in December 2023 when the 36-year-old businessman speeding down the road in his car, hit the 23-year-old woman.

According to a report in South China Morning Post (SCMP), the man, identified only by his surname, Li, was speeding because of an emergency when he hit the woman who was cycling at the time. After the accident, Li immediately rushed out of the car to check on her and apologised profusely while the woman -- who had initially brushed aside his concern with a “No worries” -- was diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

While the woman was in the hospital, Li visited her every day to look after her, and the two allegedly developed feelings for each other. The woman's parents also did not take legal action against Li or seek compensation.

Three weeks after the accident, the woman confessed her love for Li and although he rejected her initially, saying he was too old for her, but relented eventually when he agreed to go to watch a movie with her, because he “owed her that for knocking into her”.

Last September, the woman got pregnant, and the couple got married in central China’s Hunan province this month, the publication reported.

Li said he has debts and had no intention of getting married until he met his wife. He also thanked her for her “bravery”. The woman, on the other hand, is a fresh graduate and works at a local milk tea shop.
