WhatsApp is introducing a refreshed status style update called “About,” closely mirroring Instagram Notes. Users can now post short, text based snippets that sit above one to one chats and appear on profile pages, offering a quick way to share what they are doing or why they may not be available. The idea is to spark conversations or simply provide context at a glance.
Although many will see this as a brand new addition, WhatsApp notes that “About” was actually the app’s very first feature before private messaging took centre stage. Back then, users shared short updates much like this. The relaunch brings that concept back but makes it far more visible than before, placing the update at the top of chats and letting users tap it to send a direct reply.
Ephemeral by default, but fully customisable
Like Instagram Notes, the new About status disappears automatically after 24 hours. However, users can adjust the timer to have it vanish sooner or remain visible for longer than a day. Visibility controls are also included, allowing people to limit the update to their contacts or share it more publicly.
Not as feature rich as Instagram Notes yet
For now, WhatsApp’s version is simpler than Instagram Notes, which already supports looping video snippets and music integration. WhatsApp’s About feature is currently text only, but Meta hints that it could evolve if users adopt the format widely. Given how deeply WhatsApp is embedded in daily communication in markets like India, Brazil and the UK, uptake is likely to be strong.
Rolling out now
The new About feature is rolling out globally on mobile devices this week, giving WhatsApp’s two billion users a lightweight, low effort way to broadcast quick updates without cluttering chats.
