Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) major Zoho will soon start commercial manufacturing of power tools, announced its co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Sridhar Vembu on X  (formerly Twitter).

The brand has been named "Karuvi", drawing inspiration from the Tamil word for instrument or tool.

"We have a suite of tools ready to start commercial production. We are trying some innovative ideas in the factory being built in Tenkasi," Vembu said on the social network platform.

The journey started, explains Vembu, when a "Zoho fan" Abdul Gafoor who runs Mr. Light Global showed up with a bunch of tools. "He told me he wanted Zoho to make these products and he would love to distribute them," Vembu further wrote.

Mr. Light Global operates in the electrical and electronics product distribution space in the Middle East, and now in India.

On being made aware that this venture could potentially create rural jobs, Vembu was "hooked" to the idea.

Almost two years ago, both companies set up a small manufacturing team for this purpose. Replying to a question posted by a user on X, Vembu said the team had two engineers initially, and has since then expanded to about 10.
