Manoj Jarange made the announcement after Maharashtra minister and member of Maratha quota sub-committee Shambhuraj Desai, Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre met him
Maratha Quota Bill: Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange-Patil has issued a stern warning, suggesting the potential start of a statewide 'rasta roko' agitation beginning on February 24. He emphasised the gravity of the situation by threatening to organise a widespread roadblock across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, on March 3.
This is the third attempt by state government to give reservation quota to Marathas, a politically and socially dominant community in the state.
Maratha Reservation: Manoj Jarange-Patil, the activist leading the campaign for caste-based reservations, has cautiously welcomed the recently passed reservation bill in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
The numerical strength of the Marathas can potentially influence results in 200 of Maharashtra's 288 Assembly seats
Since the Marathas are already covered in 16 percent reservation, even though the validity of the bill is subjudice, the 10 percent EWS quota cannot be extended to the community.
The high court had earlier this month chided the government for issuing an advertisement for job recruitment even as petitions challenging the legislation are pending.
"All political elements were taken into confidence before providing reservation to Marathas," the party said in an editorial published in Saamana.
The quota granted to Marathas is over and above the existing reservation provided to OBCs, SCs, STs, denotified nomadic tribes and special backward categories.
The previous Congress-NCP government had provided a five per cent quota to Muslims alongwith a 16 per cent quota for Marathas in Maharashtra.
Total reservation in Maharashtra is currently at 52 percent, already higher than the 50 percent cap set by the Supreme Court of India. With the state assembly approving the bill for 16 percent reservations, the total reservation in Maharashtra will increase to 68 percent.
The government had earlier said that the Bill pertaining to Maratha quota would be introduced in the state Legislature on November 29.
