To accommodate the surge of pilgrims for Puri Rath Yatra 2025, East Coast Railway will run 365 special trains across Odisha and neighbouring states during the festival period beginning June 27.
After 53 years, Odisha's Puri gears up for a monumental two-day Rath Yatra. President Droupadi Murmu will join lakhs of devotees as the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra make their sacred journey from the Lion's Gate to Gundicha temple. The event featured the dignified 'Pahandi' ritual at 11 am, with ceremonial preparations and chants resonating through the air, offering a rich experience of cultural splendour and communal devotion.
Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief administrator Ranjan Kumar Das said it is expecting a congregation of around 10 lakh people in Puri on June 20.
The nine-day rath yatra of Lord Jagannath begins on July 1 in Odisha's Puri. Similar yatras will be taken out in other parts of the country. Odisha police have made top-notch security arrangements keeping the crowd at the festival in mind.
Instead of the usual cavalcade of around 100 trucks, decked up elephants, akhadas and singing troupes, this year's procession consisted of only three chariots, pulled by nearly 100 youths from the Khalasi community, and four to five other vehicles.
