The positive growth in cargo traffic was recorded by all major ports except Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar and Chennai Ports, it said.

Cargo traffic at 12 major ports that are under the control of the Centre dropped by 6.61 per cent to 600.62 million tonnes (MT) during April-February this fiscal, compared with 643.10 MT in the year-ago period, the Indian Ports Association (IPA) said in its latest report.
Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had recently said the cargo traffic at 12 major ports declined considerably March onwards due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the April-December 2019-20, Directorate of Ports at Odisha recorded highest growth in traffic at 64.2 per cent followed by Ports of Tamil Nadu Maritime Board (34.1 per cent), Directorate of Ports, Puducherry, 27.7 per cent) and Ports Management Board, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (25.4 per cent) against the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, as per the report.
"The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 5.12 percent and together handled 343.26 MT of cargo during April-September, 2018 as against 326.54 MT handled during the corresponding period of previous year," the shipping ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
"The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 1.78 percent and together handled 56.81 million tonnes of cargo during the period April 2018 as against 55.82 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year," the Shipping Ministry said in a statement.
Increased demand from sectors like iron ore, coking coal and container traffic resulted in higher movement of cargo last month to 55.75 MT, as per the Indian Ports Association.
These top ports under the Centre had handled 499.68 MT cargo during the April-January period of the last fiscal.
These ports, under the control of the Centre, had handled 348.21 million tonnes (MT) of cargo during April-October period of the previous fiscal.
