India recently conducted a successful test launch of its new-generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile, named 'Agni Prime'. The launch took place from Abdul Kalam Island, situated off the coast of Odisha, on Wednesday, April 3, at around 7 pm. Here are five key points to understand about this significant development:

1. Agni Prime's Characteristics: The 'Agni Prime' missile is an advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles. It is a two-stage canisterised missile with a maximum range of 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers.

Notably, it is lighter than its predecessors, weighing at least 50 percent less than the Agni 3 missile. The missile incorporates new guidance and propulsion systems, enhancing its overall performance.

2. Transportability and Storage: One of the notable features of the 'Agni Prime' missile is its canisterised design, allowing for easier transportation by road and rail.

Additionally, it can be stored for longer periods, significantly reducing the preparation and launch time. This capability enhances the missile's versatility and operational readiness.

3. Launch Mechanism: The 'Agni Prime' missile utilises a cold launch mechanism, enabling it to be fired in salvo mode. This feature enhances its flexibility in various operational scenarios, providing greater tactical advantages to the armed forces.

4. Testing History: The first test of the 'Agni Prime' missile was conducted in 2021, followed by a second test six months later in December of the same year. In June 2023, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the first night launch of the missile, further validating its capabilities.

5. Strategic Significance: The successful development and testing of the 'Agni Prime' missile represent a significant milestone for India's defence capabilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Strategic Forces Command (SFC), and the armed forces for their efforts in achieving this feat. The induction of this new missile is expected to serve as an excellent force multiplier for the Indian military, bolstering its deterrence capabilities.

In addition to the 'Agni Prime' missile, India recently conducted the first flight test of the indigenously developed Agni-5 missile, which has a range of up to 5,000 kilometers. These advancements underscore India's commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities and ensuring its security in the region.
