The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 14 fielded Union Cabinet ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Dr L Murugan for the Rajya Sabha Biennial Elections on February 27.
The party’s Central Election Committee named three more, Umesh Nath Maharaj, Maya Naroliya and Bansilal Gurjar, all from from Madhya Pradesh, for elections to the Upper House.
Murugan has been nominated from Madhya Pradesh in place of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as his seat will fall vacant after completing his tenure in April, while railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has been fielded from Odisha for another term.
A total of 58 Rajya Sabha members, including eight Union ministers, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP national president JP Nadda will retire by the first week of May.
Earlier on February 12, the party announced 16 candidates from Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal for the Rajya Sabha elections.
The Election Commission of India has set February 15 as the last date for filing nominations, while February 20 is the last date to withdraw the candidature, and voting will take place on February 27.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is likely to gain as many as six seats with two each in Bihar, Maharashtra and Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha polls as Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal(United) and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar have joined the ruling government.
