Kerala’s Wayanad district, which experienced devastating landslides on July 30 after heavy rainfall in just 24 hours, is bracing for more heavy rain and possible flash floods.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Thursday, warning of potentially dangerous weather.
Kozhikode and Wayanad are expected to receive heavy rainfall between 7-11 cm and very heavy rainfall between 12-20 cm over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. The ‘orange’ alert urges authorities to prepare for action, similar to the alert issued before the July 29 landslides.
Three devastating back-to-back landslides hit Chooralmala and Mundakai areas in Wayanad in the early hours of July 30, destroying houses and buildings over a vast area and burying residents under mud. That fateful morning marked one of the worst natural disasters Kerala had ever witnessed that killed over 300.
