The deceased were on their two-wheeler when a speeding Porsche hit their bike from behind during wee hours on Sunday in Pune.

The teenager who was behind the wheel of a sports car involved in a deadly collision in Pune was granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).

According to the 17-year-old's lawyer Prashant Patil, the teenager was granted bail on the following conditions- he must work with traffic police in Yerwada for 15 days, write an essay on accidents, undergo treatment for his drinking habit and take counselling sessions. The accused is the son of a prominent Pune realtor. According to NDTV, he is four months short of turning 18.

What was the case?

The minor was returning from a pub in the wee hours of Sunday after celebrating clearing Class 12 exams. He was driving the Porsche at over 200 kms per hour and the vehicle had no number plate. The vehicle hit a two-wheeler in Pune’s Kalyaninagar junction, killing Anis Awadhiya (24) and Ashwini Costa (24). The deceased were both engineers from Madhya Pradesh and were working in Pune. An FIR was registered under sections relating to death by negligence and rash driving. According to an eyewitness, after being hit by the vehicle, Ashwini was thrown about 20 feet in the air and landed hard, while Aneesh was thrown at a parked car and suffered serious injuries. Both died on the spot.

Pune City Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar said a case was registered against the teen and the pub that served liquor to the minor. The Porsche that was involved in the accident was registered in the name of the minor's father. “We registered a case under Section 304 (causing the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Since he was a minor, an application was made to the court that the minor should be tried as an adult. The court has rejected the permission," the police told India Today.

The minor car driver has been charged at the Yerawada police station under various sections of the IPC, including 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304A (causing death by a rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide), 337 (causing hurt by an act so rash or negligent as to endanger human life or personal safety of others), and 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others), as well as provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act (MV Act), as per reports.
