Nine migrant labourers from northern states lost their lives in a tragic accident at the Ennore Thermal Power Plant in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday. The accident occurred during construction activities at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station, trapping several workers under the collapsed structure.
According to police officials, four workers died on the spot, while five others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai. Several others sustained grievous injuries and remain in critical condition under intensive medical care.
Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Secretary Dr. J Radhakrishnan and TANGEDCO Chairman visited the hospital to meet the injured workers and oversee medical arrangements. Emergency services and rescue teams were pressed into action immediately after the incident, and a probe has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse.
“A tragic accident occurred at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station construction site today. Preliminary reports indicate that more than 10 people sustained serious injuries. Rescue operations are underway, and the matter is under investigation,” the Avadi Police Commissionerate said in a statement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy, calling it a deeply saddening incident. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of those who died, and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also conveyed his condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased workers.
