India has become the largest supplier of smartphones to the United States, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday, highlighting the country’s rapid rise in electronics manufacturing and exports.
Speaking at the inauguration of Metro projects in Bengaluru, the Minister said India’s electronics production has grown sixfold in the last 11 years, reaching a value of Rs 12 lakh crore. Electronic exports, he added, have surged eight times to Rs 3 lakh crore during the same period.
“India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world,” Vaishnaw said, underscoring the nation’s expanding role in the global tech supply chain.
Smartphone manufacturing boom
Government data shows that India’s mobile and electronics sector has undergone a dramatic transformation since 2014.
In 2014, India had only two mobile manufacturing units; today, there are over 300.
In FY14, just 26 percent of mobile phones sold in India were locally made; now, 99.2 percent are manufactured domestically.
The manufacturing value of mobile phones has risen from Rs 18,900 crore in FY14 to Rs 4.22 lakh crore in FY24.
This growth aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India a global technology hub and ensure inclusive access to advanced electronics for all citizens.
Rising position in global exports
India’s emergence as the top smartphone supplier to the US reflects its growing competitiveness in the international market. Alongside China and Vietnam, India is now a major player in global electronics manufacturing, with companies shifting production to diversify supply chains.
Railway expansion alongside tech growth
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off three new Vande Bharat trains from Bengaluru’s KSR station:
Ajni (Nagpur) – Pune
KSR Bengaluru – Belgavi
Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra – Amritsar
With these additions, the number of Vande Bharat trains has risen to 150 (75 pairs), Vaishnaw noted in a post on X.
