A section of advocates at the Madras High Court and also a group of advocates at the Madurai bench staged a protest on Monday in support of their colleague S Vanchinathan against whom contempt of court action was initiated.
Eight retired judges of the Madras High Court have appealed to the division bench of the Madurai High Court to refrain from taking contempt of court action for the time being against the Madurai advocate Vanchinathan, allegedly for scandalising a judge.
Vanchinathan had purportedly written to the Chief Justice of India alleging caste and communal bias on the part of a judge. He had made the allegations in his social media posts.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to examine the Punjab government's plea against an order directing it to abide by the decision over the release of 4,500 cusecs of extra water to Haryana.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed Punjab to abide by the decision taken in the meeting held on May 2 under the chairmanship of the union home secretary.
On Monday appearing before a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, senior advocate Abhishek M Singhvi, representing Punjab, said Haryana was already exceeding its entitlement beyond 100 per cent and on "humanitarian grounds", Punjab gave 4,000 extra cusecs to Haryana.

Two men have been arrested for allegedly duping a Delhi man of Rs 3.75 lakh on the pretext of offering a work-from-home job and laundering the proceeds via cryptocurrency, an official said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Ahtisham (25) and Mukesh Luthra (29), ran an elaborate cyber fraud syndicate offering fake part-time jobs such as online product reviews to lure unsuspecting victims, he said.
"After building initial trust with small payouts, the victims were asked to undertake pre-paid tasks with the promise of higher returns, leading to continued investment and eventual financial loss," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said.

Punjab: Six killed as pickup vehicle plunges into canal
Six people were killed after a pickup vehicle fell into the Sirhind canal near Jagera bridge in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday night when a group of more than 25 devotees was returning after paying obeisance at Mata Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh.
Police said that the van plunged into the canal when its driver lost control while overtaking another vehicle at the bank of the canal.
Bodies of six devotees have been recovered and three others are still missing, said Satinder Singh, Deputy Inspector General Police of police, Ludhiana police range.
