The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-Bombay) has reportedly imposed a fine on about eight students who participated in a play loosely based on the epic Ramayana. The quantum of fine extends to Rs 1.2 lakh in some cases, according to reports.
The students participated in a play titled 'Raahovan' during the institute's annual performing arts festival held in March. Lead characters were depicted in a "derogatory manner", a Times of India report said citing complaints made by a section of students.
According to the report, the group who participated in the play consisted of both graduating students and juniors. While graduating students have been penalised with a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh each and will not get any acknowledgment for any gymkhana awards, the juniors are required to pay Rs 40,000 each. Not just that, the juniors have also been debarred from hostel facilities, the TOI report further quoted a student as saying.
The action against these students came after recommendations from a disciplinary committee following several complaints.
Last year, the institute had imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on a student who protested against the designated “veg-only” tables. The controversy erupted after one of the mess councils reserved some tables for vegetarians.
The mess council at hostels 12, 13, and 14 of the institute reserved six tables for vegetarians in the common mess space. The rule sparked unrest among students at the campus as according to them this official segregation was unnecessary and not at all inclusive.
The rule was imposed to create “a more inclusive and peaceful dining experience for all,” the mess council stated in the email.
