“We must understand that India has a longstanding relationship with Russia that is based on mutuality of interests," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday responded to comments made by senior US official Donald Lu regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Russia. The Ministry emphasised on India's long-term relationship with Russia and asserted that in a multipolar world, each nation has the right to make its own diplomatic choices.

“We must understand that India has a longstanding relationship with Russia that is based on mutuality of interests. In a multipolar world, all countries have the freedom of choice. It is essential for everybody to be mindful of and appreciate such realities,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a press briefing.

His remarks came after Lu expressed 'disappointment' over PM Modi's visit to Russia and said that Washington is holding "tough conversations" with India on these concerns.

During his visit to Russia, PM Modi described the country as India's "all-weather friend" and hailed President Vladimir Putin’s leadership in strengthening the bilateral relationship over the past two decades.

The Prime Minister's appreciation of Putin came amid attempts by Western powers to isolate the Russian leader over the war in Ukraine.

During the visit, both the sides noted with satisfaction the significant growth of bilateral trade in 2023 which is around double of the bilateral trade target of USD 30 billion set by the leaders for 2025. The leaders also directed their relevant officials to explore the possibility of commencing negotiations for signing a bilateral free-trade agreement in services and investments.

Prior to Lu, US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti said in a veiled reference that "strategic autonomy" cannot apply in times of conflict and India and the US must work towards upholding principles when there is breach of rules-based order or violation of sovereign borders.

Though the US envoy did not make any reference to Modi's visit to Moscow, the remarks were largely seen as Washington's criticism of the trip.

"India, like many other countries, values its 'strategic autonomy'. The US ambassador is entitled to his opinion. Obviously, we have different views," Jaiswal said.

"Our comprehensive global strategic partnership with the US gives us the space to agree to disagree on certain issues, while respecting each other's view-points," he said.
