Hours after the opposition cornered the Bharatiya Janata after videos showed the roof of the new Parliament building leaking due to heavy rain in Delhi, the Lok Sabha Secretariat offering an explanation said the "minor water leakage" was due to adhesive strips on glass domes - "installed in parts of the building, including lobby, to utilise abundant natural light" - coming loose.
"During heavy rains on Wednesday, the adhesive used for fixing the glass domes over the lobby of the building came off slightly, leading to minor water leakage in the lobby," the Secretariat said, adding, "The problem was detected and measures taken immediately. No further leakage was observed..."
The torrential downpour on Wednesday, which saw parts of the city receive record rainfall, prompted the India Meteorological Department to issue a 'red alert' for the city.
The Opposition questioned the durability of the new Parliament building after Congress MP Manickam Tagore posted a video on X that showed water leaking from the roof of the lobby of the new Parliament building.
"There are media reports that heavy rains in Delhi on Wednesday caused water leakage into the Lobby of the newly inaugurated Parliament Building, raising concerns about the weather resilience of the structure. It has also been reported that waterlogging was noticed around the premises, particularly near the New Parliament’s Makar Dwar, with several videos of the waterlogging going viral on social media platforms," it said in a statement.
