A second-year student of a private medical college was allegedly gangraped in West Bengal's Durgapur, news agency ANI reported.

The victim, a medical student, is from Jaleswar in Odisha. India Today reported that the student had gone out of the campus on Friday at 8.30 pm with a male friend, when a man dragged her to a secluded place behind the hospital and raped her.

The police received information about the incident and rushed to the spot, following which a probe into the matter began. The survivor was admitted to the hospital for medical examination after that.

Police are also questioning the medical college staff and other people, including the friend with whom the woman had gone out of the campus.

The India Today report further said that the father of the victim has told the media that he was informed of the incident by his daughter's friend. "When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration," he was quoted by the India Today report as saying.

He further said that his daughter had stepped out to eat "phuchka" after Wasif Ali, her boyfriend, had called her to meet her.

"When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded Rs 3,000 to return it. Later, the boy who had gone with her brought her back," he said.

"I want justice for my daughter so that such incidents do not happen to any other girl. There is no proper security on the campus," he added.

However, police are yet to give an official statement and are reportedly investigating the case from all angles before divulging any further information on the case, that has reminded everyone of the RG Kar rape case that had shook the entire nation in 2024.
