Along with the excitement and the celebratory air, Diwali also brings along the tradition of deep cleaning our homes. As per Hindu customs, goddess Lakshmi and lord Ganesha are revered throughout the festival. It is believed that Diwali cleaning or ‘Diwali safai’ welcomes the gods, and brings along happiness and prosperity into the homes. A clean and well-maintained space not only enhances the festive spirit but also provides a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through your door.

Here are some practical Diwali cleaning tips to ensure your home sparkles as brightly as the diyas. Happy cleaning!

1. Declutter first, decorate later

Before diving into the cleaning process, declutter your living spaces. Diwali is the perfect time to part ways with items that no longer serve you. Go room by room, closet by closet—sorting through clothes, books, and miscellaneous items. Donate or discard things you haven't used in the past year. This not only creates a serene environment but also makes space for the vibrant Diwali decorations you have in mind.

2. Dust every nook and cranny

Start your Diwali cleaning by dusting surfaces, furniture, and decor items. Use microfibre cloths to trap dust effectively. Don't forget neglected areas like ceiling corners, light fixtures, and behind furniture. Once dusted, give your furniture a fresh lease of life by polishing with a suitable wood cleaner. This step adds a natural radiance to your living spaces, enhancing the festive aura.

3. Make windows and glass squeaky clean

Diwali is all about letting the light in, so make sure your windows and glass doors are crystal clear. Mix white vinegar with water for an effective DIY glass cleaner. Wipe down windows and glass surfaces with a lint-free cloth for streak-free shine. Clean window sills and frames to ensure they complement the gleaming glass.

4. Deep clean the kitchen

Your kitchen is the heart of Diwali preparations. Start by emptying and cleaning out your fridge, disposing of expired items. Deep clean kitchen cabinets, focusing on areas prone to grease and grime. Sanitise countertops, sink, and appliances with a mixture of baking soda and water. This not only ensures a hygienic cooking space, but also sets the stage for delightful Diwali feasts.

5. Let the floors shine

Floors bear the brunt of daily activities, and Diwali is the ideal time to show them some love. Depending on the type of flooring, use appropriate cleaning agents. For wooden floors, a damp mop with a mild cleaner works wonders. Tiles and marble floors shine with a mixture of water and a few drops of mild detergent. Don't forget the corners and edges for a comprehensive floor makeover.

6. Uplift your upholstery

Revitalise your living room by giving your sofas and cushions a spa day. Vacuum upholstery to remove dust and crumbs. Depending on the fabric, use a suitable cleaner to remove stains and spills. Fluff up cushions and throws for that inviting, cosy feel. Diwali is all about comfort, and a well-maintained sofa contributes to the warm ambiance.

7. Let your bathroom look fresh

No Diwali cleaning is complete without paying attention to bathrooms. Scrub tiles, clean grout, and disinfect surfaces. Add a few drops of essential oil to your toilet bowl for a burst of freshness. Replace old towels with new, fluffy ones. A sparkling, fragrant bathroom adds to the overall festive experience for your guests.

8. Focus on the outdoors too

If you have a garden or outdoor space, extend your Diwali cleaning to these areas. Trim overgrown plants, sweep pathways, and clean outdoor furniture. Illuminate your garden with fairy lights and lanterns to create a magical atmosphere for your Diwali celebrations.
