The first encounter of the 2025 Women's Ashes goes to the hosts who have begun the multi-format series dominantly. Australia Women are ahead now but England Women have a chance to level things up in the second ODI on the 14th of this month. Join us at 11.05 pm GMT (the previous day) for the action. You can join us early for the build up. Till then, cheers!

Alyssa Healy, the captain of Australia Women says that she is very happy to take the two points but reckons that they could have been more clinical with the bat. Adds that it felt nice to contribute with the bat after a bit of a tough time and is looking forward to the next game.

Heather Knight, the skipper of England Women says that the bowlers did a fine job and in the end they were just short of runs with the bat and the wicket-taking mindset shown by the bowlers, especially Lauren Bell was fantastic to see and just need to sharpen up on a few things. Adds that they did a few things really well and need to convert starts with the bat into big scores and the wicket was always a bit difficult to get going.

Ash Gardner is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. She says that it is an honor and a privilege to put on this shirt and it was special to achieve those milestones in front of a sold-out crowd in her hometown and they got the win as well. Adds that the wicket was a bit tricky and helped the bowlers and it was about keeping the stumps in play for her.

...Presentation...

Earlier, Australia Women chose to bowl first and were right on the money with the new ball. They put the visitors under pressure but allowed them to score freely in the middle phase. Heather Knight, Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones got off to a start but failed to convert it into a big score. Jones and Wyatt-Hodge added 47 for the 5th wicket from that first drop and who knows, had either of those catches been taken, England Women might have been rolled over for 150. Megan Schutt was as always brilliant with the new ball. Alana King and Ash Gardner spun the web around England but for us, Darcie Brown was the pick of the lot with a spell of (7-0-21-1).

It looked like it would be one way traffic but Sophie Ecclestone struck and got England Women back into the game. Australia Women lost a couple more after that but Ash Gardner made sure to take his team over the line. England Women were short of runs but credit to their bowlers for fighting right till the end and who knows what could have happened if Eccelstone had managed to keep hold of Gardner's catch with still 20-plus runs needed for the win..

Australia Women were tested with the new ball by the two Laurens, both Bell and Filer bowled brilliantly in their opening spell and got two big wickets of Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry. The latter was dropped once but she failed to make the most of the chance. However, then came the partnership between Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney worth 61 runs that shifted the momentum of the chase. The duo dealt with boundaries with the former scoring a brilliant fifty.

A fairly comfortable start to the series for Australia Women looking at the scoreboard which doesn't tell the complete story and they get off the mark in the 2025 Women's Ashes series. England Women ended with an under-par score but it was never going to be a straightforward chase for Australia Women on a tricky wicket.

38.5FOUR! There it is, Alana King hits the winning runs and gets Australia Women in the lead in this multi-format Ashes series. Natalie Sciver-Brunt pitches the ball up on the off stump line, King backs away and swats it back over the bowler's head for a boundary. Australia Women win by 4 wickets and get their first 2 points on the board.

38.4Back of a length and on a tight line around off, pushed down towards cover.

38.3On the fuller side again and angled in at the pads, King tucks it away to mid-wicket. No room provided here by Natalie Sciver-Brunt.

38.2This one is pitched up around off, King pushes it out towards cover.

38.1Beaten! Just short of a good length and around off, King goes after it but misses.

37.6Fuller in length again, outside off, Alana King drives it away through the gap at covers and picks up a single.

37.5Nice and full around off, driven away to extra cover. They think about the single but decide against it as the fielder scores a direct hit at the keeper's end.

37.4Back of a length and outside off, King looks to take it on but is beaten for pace and extra bounce.

37.3FOUR! Off the outer half of the blade and Australia Women are now in touching distance of the win. Too full and wide, Alana King backs away and slashes at it, getting it wide of short third for a boundary.

37.2Hard length angled in at the pads, Gardner misses the flick and the ball goes off the pads past square leg. They pick up a leg bye.

37.1FOUR! Oh, just short of the bowler and through for a boundary! On a good length around off, Ash Gardner drills it on the up and straight back as Lauren Filer gets down on the follow-through but can't get low enough. The ball through races past a diving Sophie Ecclestone at mid off and into the fence.

36.6Back of a length over off, Gardner goes back and across before pushing it wide of covers for one.

36.5Just back of a length and outside off, tapped away into the gap at covers and Alana King picks up another single.

36.4Good length outside off, driven on the up and through cover-point for a single.

36.3FOUR! Adding insult to injury there! Banged in short and around off, Ash Gardner hangs back and gets across before pulling it away wide of deep square leg for a boundary.

36.2Good length at the stumps, tucked away neatly in front of square leg for a single.

36.1Oh, my goodness! Horrible cricket all around and Sophie Ecclestone might have just dropped the catch that could have turned the game on its head. A full toss from Lauren Bell, Ash Gardner miscues it completely and just lobs it to the right of mid off. Ecclestone gets across and pouches the ball but takes a tumble and spills it out as the batters pick up a single. It was a horrible ball, and an even worse shot. And then, call it unlucky might be, but a ridiculous mess of a simple catch, albeit replays show that Ecclestone's elbow hit the ground after the catch was taken and hence, the ball spilled out

35.6On a length and pushed through around off, King gets across to cover the line and keeps it out.

Alana King is in next.

35.5OUT! CAUGHT! Maia Bouchier with a stellar catch and a struggling Tahlia McGrath has to walk back after making just 2 runs. Sophie Ecclestone shortens the length this time, bowling it around off and extracting some extra bounce as well. McGrath backs away but fails to keep the cut shot down, hitting it to the right of point where Bouchier dives across and takes a fine catch with both hands.

35.4Floated up outside off, driven away through cover-point for one.

35.3Full and straight, played back to the bowler and Sophie Ecclestone just threatens to throw the ball back at the batter.

35.2TWO BYES! Oh, that's beaten everyone! Tossed up, full and around off, turning away, Gardner swings across the line but misses and the ball just flicks the keeper's gloves before going past Heather Knight at first slip and they pick up a couple of byes.

35.1FOUR! Just lands inside the ropes! Flighted delivery on the stumps, Ash Gardner skips down the pitch and lofts it high and well over mid on, the ball goes one bounce and over the ropes for a boundary.

34.6Another tidy over from Bell. Takes pace off and bowls it on a good length outside off, McGrath backs away to slap it through the off side but is undone by the lack of pace.

34.5Hard length around off, McGrath stays upright and pushes it away into the off side.

34.4FOUR BYES! Oh, that's unfortunate for the bowler! A well-directed slower bumper, Tahlia McGrath steps out first but then has to duck and the keeper Amy Jones gets a bad bounce as the ball hops through and rolls into the fence.

34.3Good running! Just back of a length over off, Gardner presses back and pushes it down wide of covers for a quick single.

34.2Slower one, floated up a bit full again and on the stumps, Gardner waits before leaning on and pushing it back to the bowler.

34.1Full and straight, floated up to the batter, Ash Gardner leans on and drives it straight to mid on.

33.6Good, tight fielding, just one off the over. Quicker one, darted in at the pads, McGrath rocks back and tucks it just wide of short 45 where the fielder makes a good stop.

33.5Tossed up, fuller now and around middle, McGrath leans on to defend.

33.4Quicker again and on middle, McGrath blocks it off.

33.3Beaten! On a good length around off, quicker too and this one grips and rips away, McGrath gets a stride across to block but the ball zips past the outside edge.

33.2Nicely flighted, giving it a loop and gets it to drift into middle and leg, McGrath plays it late and just eases it back to the bowler.

33.1Short of a length and outside off, Gardner rocks back and taps it away in front of point for a single.

32.6Good length on off, this one angles back in, McGrath just covers the line and defends it out with a straight bat.

32.5Another slower one, angled in at the hips, tucked away behind square leg for an easy single.

32.5WIDE! The attempted slower bumper, around off and this one just lobs over the batter's head. Left alone for a wide.

32.4On a hard length around off, rising up high as well, Gardner hops back and pushes it down towards cover.

32.3Good-length delivery, attacking the middle and off stump line, Gardner solidly blocks it off.

32.2Back of a length and angled in at the hips, Ash Gardner gets inside the line and pulls it up and over backward square leg for a couple of runs in the deep.

32.1Slower one, on a hard length and outside off, holding in the deck, Gardner waits and taps it towards cover.

31.6A low full toss now, around off, driven away firmly through covers for a couple of runs by McGrath.

31.5A tad shorter and darted in at the pads, McGrath looks to flick off the back foot but misses and wears it on the pads.

31.4Full and on off, Tahlia McGrath off to play it off the back foot and almost ends up getting chopped on.

31.3Flatter delivery at the stumps, blocked off by Tahlia McGrath.

Tahlia McGrath is in next.

31.2OUT! BOWLED'EM! Is that a turning point for England Women in this match? Or is it too late? Alyssa Healy is a bit too eager to step out and Charlie Dean holds the ball back just enough to see her coming. Fires it in quick and full and Healy goes through with the lofted drive but ends up yorking herself. The ball slides through to crash into the off stump and a disappointed Healy walks back for 70(78).

31.1Shortern delivery, turning it into the stumps, tucked away to mid-wicket.

30.6Oh, agonizingly out of reach! Back of a length and angled into the batter, Ash Gardner gets herself into a tangle and lobs it up towards the non-striker and Lauren Bell goes chasing after it. The ball just falls a bit too wide though.

30.5Just checked the shot! Hard length outside off, slower too, Healy sets up to play on the up but has to wait for it and just taps it wide of point for a single.

30.4A big swing and a miss! Pitched up a bit wide of the off stump line, Alyssa Healy stays put and just swings across the line, missing the ball by a fair distance.

30.3Hard length around the top of off, Healy stays back and plays it really late and towards backward point.

30.2FOUR! Gloriously driven by Healy! A bit too full around off and shaping away, Healy keeps a still head and stylishly caresses it away through covers for a boundary.

30.1Length ball, slanting back into middle, Alyssa Healy plays it on the up and straight into the wickets at the other end.

Drinks! Australia Women in complete control of this contest at the moment and England Women require a couple of quick blows to even have an outside chance. With just 46 runs needed for the win and 6 wickets in hand, Alyssa Healy and Ash Gardner will be looking to go on and get the job done themselves. England just don't have enough runs on the board but it isn't over yet.

29.6Shortens the length and bowls it on the stumps, this is nudhed away to the leg side.

29.5FOUR! Nicely done! Tossed up wide outside off, Ash Gardner skips down the pitch, backing away as well and gets enough on the lofted shot to take it over covers and into the fence.

29.4Flatter one at the stumps, tucked away towards mid-wicket.

29.3More than half a shout for LBW, turned down and England Women don't have any reviews left either. Quicker one on middle, turning back in a long way, Gardner plays all over it and gets hit on the pads. The replays show that it would have missed leg by a fair bit as well.

29.2On the bounce! Tossed up around off, Alyssa Healy plays the cross-batted slog sweep and hits it flat and just wide of Danni Wyatt-Hodge at deep mid-wicket for a single.

29.1Tossed up around off, Gardner drives it away through the cover region for a single.

28.6Maiden! Tosses it up on a length, slower too and this one s,slides back in from around off, Healy backs away and keeps it out.

28.5Five dots on the trot! Nicely tossed up, in and around off stump, eased away off the front foot towards cover.

28.4Gives it more air and flights it outside off, inviting Healy to go inside-out again but Healy controls it well enough and strokes it to covers.

28.3Pushed through quick and flat around off, Healy backs away but can't beat the fielder at point.

28.2Nice and full again, drifted into middle and leg, Healy makes another block.

28.1Tossed up on off, a bit more energy into the delivery and Alyssa Healy just blocks it off.

27.6Fired in full and outside off, in the blockhole and Gardner can't get it away.

The lights are on at the North Sydney Oval as it has gotten a bit gloomy but there's still plenty of bright spots.

27.5FOUR! Fractionally short again but a bit too straight, Ash Gardner has enough time to rock back and pull it firmly between square and mid-wicket for a boundary.

27.4Flatter one around off, punched away wide of covers for a single.

27.3Ever so slightly short and on the pads, Gardner whips it away to deep square leg for one.

26.1Tossed up, on a length and around off, Ash Gardner presses back and taps it towards cover.

25.6FOUR! Short of a length over middle and this one just sits up, Alyssa Healy muscles the ball well in front of square on the leg side and picks up another boundary.

25.5A missed opportunity there! Juicy full toss outside off, dipping slightly as well, Alyssa Healy ends up just stroking it towards mid off.

25.4Back of a length over middle, extra bounce on offer again, Gardner gets inside the line and works it behind square leg for another single.

25.3Fuller length around off, driven square through the off side for one more.

25.2Banged in short and right at the batter, Gardner pulls it away wide of deep square leg but Danni Wyatt-Hodge gets quickly across to her right and keeps it down to one.

25.1Full and outside off, right in the blockhole, Gardner drives it off the cue end of the bat and towards first slip.

24.6FOUR! Top shot! Tossed up on off, Alyssa Healy backs away early and steps out before smashing it inside-out wide of mid off for a boundary.

23.3Just back of a length and outside off, Ash Gardner looks to cut but misses.

23.3WIDE! Full and wide outside off, a bit too wide though.

Ash Gardner is the next batter in.

23.2OUT! CAUGHT! That extra bounce has worked brilliantly for Lauren Filer and she gets a deserved reward. Banged in short and around off, a bit more pace on it as well. Annabel Sutherland leans back to pull it away but ends up getting a top edge over square leg. Danni Wyatt-Hodge races in from the deep and dives forward to take a fine catch. Australia Women 124/4, still needing 81 to win.

23.1Slightly short and outside off, tennis-ball like bounce on that one, Healy controls it well and cuts it past point for a single.

22.6Uppish again but falls short! Nicely tossed up, on a length and around off, turning away with some extra bounce, Sutherland is taken aback and gets a leading edge just wide of Danni Wyatt-Hodge at backward point.

21.5Oh, any sort of a deflection on that and Healy was gone! Pitched up around middle, Sutherland shows the full face of the bat and drives it straight a bit too straight though as the ball crashes into the stumps at the bowler's end.

21.5WIDE! A proper short ball, banged in over the front shoulder and angling down leg, Sutherland looks to pull but misses and a wide is called.

21.4Back of a length and around off, dabbed away into covers. There is a wayward throw at the bowler's end and they look to pinch the overthrow but decide against it.
