The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will build around one lakh new house over the next two years to meet the demand for affordable housing in the state's key markets, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde has said.
Shinde also said the state's housing policy, which has been in the works for several years, would be introduced "soon". He was speaking to the media late on January 29 after the conclusion of the MHADA's Pune board lottery.
MHADA's Pune regional board allotted 3,662 affordable homes located largely in the municipal limits of Pune, its twin city of Pimpri-Chinchwad, and areas covered under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
MHADA is the state’s nodal affordable housing authority.
The authority received more than 71,000 applications for allocations, which included homes under lottery as well as on a first-come-first-serve basis. Of the allotted homes, most were received from developers under the authority's "comprehensive housing scheme", MHADA officials said.
The authority has set a long-term goal of developing eight lakh homes across all of its regional boards in Maharashtra, with a focus on the Mumbai metropolitan region, which is covered by the Mumbai and Konkan regional boards.
In an earlier interview to Moneycontrol, MHADA's vice-president and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal said the authority planned to sell around 5,000 homes every year in Mumbai through lottery.
In October, MHADA allotted more than 2,000 homes in its Mumbai board lottery, with another lottery planned later this year.
For the Konkan board, which covers cities in the Mumbai metropolitan region such as Thane, Kalyan, Virar, and some areas near the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport, the authority notified a lottery in October 2024.
Of that, around 2,100 homes and 110 plots will be allotted through on February 5, officials said.
Shinde, who also holds the housing portfolio, said hostels for students and working women as well as dedicated housing for seniors, will also be developed under the new housing policy.
