How to link your RuPay credit card to UPI for easy digital payments

If you need to make UPI payments using cash that you don’t yet have, getting a virtual RuPay credit card is a good idea. A RuPay credit card is a virtual card that your bank can assign you if you already have a MasterCard or Visa credit card with that bank. This virtual card can then be linked to your UPI platform to make payments. However, be cautious about overspending, as credit cards can lead to impulsive purchases.

Not enough cash in your bank? Don’t worry, you can now use your credit card to make a UPI transaction. In a bid to promote more digital payments, the Reserve Bank of India has allowed users to link your credit card to your UPI platform. Just remember, the credit card must be a virtual RuPay credit card.

How to Apply For a Virtual RuPay Credit Card
As of now, UPI platforms don’t allow you to choose your existing credit cards as a mode of payment. If you would like to make UPI payments using your credit card, you need to apply to your bank for a virtual RuPay credit card. You can check with your bank whether you are eligible for a virtual RuPay credit card. If you are, you can apply for it through your bank’s mobile app, through net banking, or by calling customer care. However, only those with existing credit cards can apply for the virtual RuPay credit card from their bank.

The virtual RuPay credit card will be a ‘secondary’ card that is linked to your existing Visa or Mastercard credit card, and the credit limit will be shared across the cards.

How to Link Your Virtual RuPay Credit Card to You UPI Platform
Once you get your RuPay credit card, you can link it to UPI-based apps like GooglePay, PayTM, PhonePe, etc. using the following steps.
Download a UPI app.
Click on the option “add credit card/link credit card”.
Choose the bank name.
Select your RuPay card.
Generate a UPI PIN by entering your card details and providing OTP to your registered phone number.

You now have the option of using your online credit card at stores or online retailers for purchases and paying for it later.

You will get a separate monthly statement for your RuPay card detailing your purchases and minimum payment due.

Benefits of Using RuPay Credit Cards
You can use your RuPay card at ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and online retailers.
They are specifically designed for the Indian market and enjoy broad acceptance domestically and internationally.

The RuPay credit cards also involve lower processing fees and are therefore notably more affordable.

Since RuPay’s servers are in India, transactions are processed more quickly.

This process will take away the hassle of carrying your credit cards everywhere, or putting in your credit card details in case you are shopping online. However, using credit cards often can lead to overspending, and the ease of payment may lead to impulsive shopping. So be mindful about your credit card limit and make purchases that are aligned with the funds available your linked savings bank account.
