Mumbai’s storied Kala Ghoda district is about to welcome a new symbol of global luxury with French retail icon Galeries Lafayette opening the doors to its first Indian flagship.
The launch, in partnership with the Aditya Birla Group, brings together Galeries Lafayette’s 130-year heritage of fashion, art, and culture with the Indian conglomerate’s deep expertise in retail, a press release said.
Their alliance, which was first announced in 2022 through Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL), has a collective goal to establish a nationwide presence for the Parisian brand through flagship stores and an omnichannel retail model.
As India’s luxury market inches closer to an estimated USD 85 billion valuation by 2030, Mumbai stands at the forefront of that growth.
“Luxury in India is at the threshold of transformation,” said Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group. “With one of the fastest-growing affluent populations in the world and a new generation of globally exposed consumers, the appetite for high-end experiences has never been stronger. A new India is emerging which is youthful, ambitious, and globally connected. One that embraces luxury as a statement of aspiration and identity.”
Echoing that sentiment, Nicolas Houzé, Executive Chairman of Galeries Lafayette Group, called the Mumbai flagship “a defining moment” for the French brand’s international journey. “With Mumbai as our anchor, we are proud to bring the French Art of Living to India."
Designed by London-based firm Virgile + Partners, the 90,000 sq. ft., five-level store reimagines Parisian sophistication through an Indian lens. The flagship will feature over 250 international designer and luxury brands, alongside personal styling, private lounges, concierge services, and curated cultural experiences.
“Galeries Lafayette ushers in a new paradigm of luxury for India, one that goes beyond retail to create cultural experiences. At ABFRL, our focus has always been on shaping aspirations while building leadership in premium and luxury retail through strategic investment and execution. With this flagship, we are setting new benchmarks in assortment, service and experience, while building on the momentum that has already placed India on the global luxury map. Our aim is to further elevate this trajectory, amplifying India’s influence and visibility in the world of luxury. This milestone reflects not only our retail vision but also our commitment to nurturing a stronger luxury ecosystem in India, one that is both aspirational and sustainable,” added Ashish Dikshit, Managing Director, ABFRL.
With its debut, Galeries Lafayette Mumbai promises to blend Art de Vivre and Joie de Vivre — introducing Indian consumers to a world where fashion, design, and culture meet under one luminous roof.
