Infosys lets go off 240 more trainees who failed tests, offers free upskilling

Infosys has also extended free training to around 326 trainees who were let go in February after failing the assessment tests

Software major Infosys has let go of 240 entry-level employees who failed internal assessments, according to company emails sent on April 18th, reviewed by Moneycontrol.

The move follows a round of terminations in February, when the Indian IT services firm let go of more than 300 trainees under similar circumstances. Infosys is offering those affected free upskilling programs through NIIT and UpGrad.

The layoffs come as Infosys navigates a subdued demand environment. The company has forecast revenue growth of just 0 percent to 3 percent for the current fiscal year, underscoring continued uncertainty in its core markets.

“Further to the announcement of the results of your final assessment attempt, please be informed that you have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program,” the email sent on April 18th read.

“As you explore opportunities outside of Infosys, we have planned professional outplacement services to help you on that journey. We also wish to offer you another career pathway, by taking an Infosys sponsored external training to prepare for potential roles in the BPM industry. On successful completion of the training, you may also apply to available opportunities in Infosys BPM Limited. However, if you wish to continue honing your IT skills, you also have an option to choose an Infosys sponsored external training program on Information Technology fundamentals to further support your IT career journey,” the email further said.

In addition, the trainees will get one month of pay, accommodation, and a travel allowance from the training centre in Mysuru to Bengaluru or their hometown.

While Infosys has tied up with UpGrad for BPM training, NIIT will help in IT training. Infosys has also extended this offer to trainees impacted in February, who now have the option to enroll in these upskilling courses, free of cost.

On April 17, 2025, about 730 trainees appeared for their third and final attempt for the batch that joined on October 21, 2024, people in the know told Moneycontrol.

The results for the next batch of trainees, who are due to appear for their third attempt, are expected next week.

On March 26, the IT services exporter let go of another 30-45 trainees from its Mysuru campus after they failed to pass internal assessments, sources had told Moneycontrol. They were offered a similar alternative career path to the affected trainees, including 12 weeks of training for potential roles in Infosys Business Process Management (BPM).

These trainees were onboarded after a two-and-a-half-year-long wait, necessitated by a macroeconomic slowdown, triggering clients of IT companies to halt spending on projects.

The said trainees were recruited in the role of System Engineers (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE).

Infosys said on April 17th that it plans to onboard 20,000 freshers this fiscal, even as it grapples with uncertainty in its major markets such as the US and Europe, as clients hold back on technology spends. It onboarded over 15,000 freshers last year.

The current batch, undergoing assessments, passed out over two and a half years ago, completing their engineering degrees at the height of Covid, when physical classes were suspended. Many of them were hired via virtual interviews.
