Hair thinning—often seen as a sign of aging—can feel like a slow, inevitable process. However, for many, it’s a genuine concern that impacts self-esteem and confidence. Whether it’s a widening part, receding hairline, or noticeable shedding, hair thinning is a common issue that affects both men and women. But what causes it, and more importantly, what can be done to prevent or even reverse it?

We spoke with dermatologists to help unravel the complexities of hair thinning and explore potential solutions.

What causes hair thinning?

Hair thinning refers to a gradual reduction in hair density, often marked by fewer strands on the scalp or hair loss in certain areas. Unlike hair shedding—part of the normal hair growth cycle—hair thinning typically signals a change in hair follicle health or growth patterns.

It can result from a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, and lifestyle choices. Dr Shitij Goel, Head & Senior Consultant, Department of Dermatology at Sharda Care-Healthcity & Sharda Hospital, explains, "The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia, a hereditary condition affecting both men and women. Hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid disorders, can also lead to thinning hair, as can medical conditions like alopecia areata, scalp infections, or chronic illnesses such as diabetes or lupus."

Additionally, "Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in iron, zinc, or vitamins D and B, can weaken hair follicles. Stress—both physical and emotional—often triggers temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium. Over-styling, excessive heat, or harsh chemical treatments can damage hair over time. Certain medications, such as those for cancer, depression, or high blood pressure, may also have hair thinning as a side effect," he adds.

While some causes of hair thinning are unavoidable, there are steps you can take to promote healthy hair growth and reduce the risk of thinning. Dr Monica Kapoor, Cosmetologist, Director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic & ILACAD Institute, recommends maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and biotin.

In addition, using gentle hair care products and avoiding excessive heat styling can help. Reducing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga, getting regular trims to prevent split ends and breakage, and avoiding harsh chemical treatments can also help prevent hair thinning.

There are several treatments available for managing and treating hair thinning, depending on its cause. Dr Shifa Yadav, Consultant, Dermatology at Artemis Hospitals, lists the following:

  1. Topical Treatments: Minoxidil (Rogaine) is an over-the-counter topical treatment that stimulates hair growth in both men and women.
  2. Prescription Medications: Finasteride (Propecia) is a prescription drug for men that blocks the hormone responsible for hair loss. For women, oral contraceptives or spironolactone may be prescribed to regulate hormones causing thinning.
  3. Hair Transplant Surgery: For significant hair loss, hair transplant surgery, which involves moving hair follicles from dense areas to thinning spots, can be an effective long-term solution.
  4. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP therapy involves injecting a concentration of the patient’s own platelets into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.
  5. Laser Therapy: Low-level laser devices, such as laser combs or helmets, may promote hair growth by increasing blood circulation to hair follicles.

Overall, stopping hair thinning requires a comprehensive strategy that addresses both external and internal factors. Dr Goel concludes, "Early intervention and consistent care can help minimize hair loss and promote healthier, stronger hair."
