The rainy season is notorious for causing hair and scalp problems. Come monsoon, and you find you hair everywhere; on pillows, in combs, clogging the shower drain. Add to that the dilemma of whether to oil your hair, wash it more often, use conditioners, or avoid them altogether. The troubles seem never-ending.

Dandruff, hairfall, sticky scalp, monsoon hair troubles are plenty. But so are the ways to prevent them. Dr Anindita Sarkar, Chief Medical Officer at Clinikally & Aayna Clinics, told Moneycontrol, “Your hair reacts to weather, stress, and how you treat it. Listen before it warning signs. But the first thing to do is separate myth from fact.”

More oiling myth

For generations, oil has been the trusted remedy for hair problems. But not all oils help, especially in monsoon. “Heavy oils trap humidity, dust, and pollutants,” Dr Sarkar told Moneycontrol. “This worsens scalp conditions, especially fungal infections.” She suggests switching to lighter oils or leave-in serums, and always cleansing thoroughly. “Oiling without washing properly can do more harm than good,”

Frizz not conditioner

Those with frizzy  hair in the monsoon pile on conditioner hoping to repair it. Dr Sarkar told Moneycontrol, “Frizz is caused by hair shaft swelling from humidity, not lack of conditioner.” Use anti-frizz serums, lightweight leave-ins, and swap cotton towels for microfiber to reduce static and swelling.

Avoid rainwater rinse

Being caught  in the rain and rinsed with water might feel clean, but it’s not enough. Rain carries pollutants and fungal triggers. “A clarifying shampoo is essential after exposure,” Dr Sarkar told Moneycontrol. “It prevents irritation, fungal buildup, and the hair fall that follows.”

Anti-dandruff early

Most reach for anti-dandruff shampoos only after flakes appear. Dr Sarkar told Moneycontrol, “Monsoon humidity boosts fungal activity before flakes show.” She adds, “Using an anti-fungal shampoo once or twice a week keeps the scalp healthy and balances the microbiome, the scalp’s natural defence”

Hair fall in monsoon is common but manageable. As Dr Sarkar told Moneycontrol, “A little fact-check goes a long way in calming the chaos.”
