How to nourish your skin during winter pollution for healthy glow: Cleanse, moisturise, nourish

Pollution, coupled with lower humidity levels, weakens the skin’s natural barriers, making it more vulnerable. This winter, it’s essential to take extra steps to care for your skin, ensuring it stays glowing and healthy despite the environmental challenges. Here’s how to do it.

As winter settles in, the skin faces a double whammy: harsh, biting winds and the persistent threat of pollution. Though you might not immediately feel the damage, your skin begins to show signs of stress; dullness, dryness, and irritation, as it fights to protect itself from the unseen toxins in the air.

"Pollution not only accelerates the ageing process but also increases the risk of skin conditions like dryness, irritation, and pigmentation issues," says Edyta Kurek, Senior Vice President, Oriflame India and Indonesia. "Taking care of your skin through proper hydration, protection, and nourishment is essential, especially in seasons with heightened environmental stress," she adds.

Kurek suggests some effective tips for a glowing and healthy skin:

  • Cleanse without stripping away moisture: Cleansing is the first step to remove pollutants and makeup buildup. But be careful, harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils. Opt for cleansers with Bio Lipid systems that remove impurities while retaining the moisture your skin needs to stay balanced and refreshed.

  • Protect your face during the day: Exposure to pollution and smoke can lead to premature ageing, dullness, and even skin damage. A protective day cream that forms a light, breathable barrier helps shield your skin from environmental stress while keeping it hydrated all day, even when air quality worsens.

  • Brighten your glow with targeted serums: Pollution is notorious for causing hyperpigmentation and dullness. Fine particles in the air penetrate the skin, causing oxidative damage that shows up as dark spots and uneven skin tone. Advanced formulas like Bio Lumilock protect the skin while enhancing its natural radiance. These serums work better than traditional brightening agents like Kojic Acid, which can irritate, by nourishing the skin and strengthening its defense against pollutants. Additionally, serums containing Oripeptide-3 help reduce fine lines and puffiness, while anti-ageing extracts from yeast, rice, and wheat promote faster collagen production, rejuvenating your skin.

  • Moisturise with natural ingredients: In the winter months, moisture is your skin’s best friend. Look for skincare that includes natural extracts like watermelon and passion fruit oil. These ingredients hydrate and soften the skin while providing antioxidants such as Vitamin E, which protect against environmental stressors. Incorporating natural skincare into your routine ensures your skin stays smooth, soft, and resilient.

  • Nurture your body: While facial skincare takes center stage, don't forget about the rest of your body. A rich lotion applied right after the shower helps lock in moisture and prevent dry skin. Pay special attention to areas like your knees and elbows that are prone to dryness. Beeswax and natural oils are perfect for these areas. Exfoliating with a body scrub once a week will also help remove dead skin cells, improving the absorption of your moisturisers.

  • Inner beauty: Supporting your skin from the inside can make a significant difference. Antioxidant supplements, particularly Astaxanthin and Bilberry extract, help fight oxidative stress and protect your skin cells from damage. Make sure the supplements you choose are free from artificial preservatives and additives, and remember that they should complement a balanced diet, not replace it.

  • Always stick to a routine, even during festivities: With the chaos of the holiday season, it's easy to neglect your skincare routine. However, consistency is key. Stick to a simple three-step routine: cleanse, moisturise, and apply sunscreen during the day, followed by a nourishing night cream before bed. Even on your busiest days, just a few minutes of self-care will ensure your skin stays in top condition.
