  • Rotten egg smell may signal a dangerous gas leak at home
  • Sewage or musty odours can indicate plumbing or mould issues
  • Fish or burning smells may point to electrical fire risks

While you enjoy the whiff of warm baked bread or freshly brewed coffee at home, there are also times when you may come across certain “bad smells.” These shouldn’t be ignored as just a stink; they may indicate larger issues at play. Identifying these smells and addressing them in a timely manner can not only save costs but also protect your family’s health and safety. Here are some common odours you should immediately note and take care of:

Rotten eggs signal a gas leak

The smell of rotten eggs might mean there’s a gas leak. In such cases, check the stove or water heater for signs. Mostly, yellow soot around the burner indicates something is off. Vacate the premises and call your gas company for assistance. A gas leak is dangerous as it may cause an explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sewage stench indicates a plumbing problem

If there’s a sewage stench in or near your bathroom, it potentially indicates a plumbing issue that needs fixing. Such a smell is strongest near drains, toilets, or basements. The problem could be a clogged pipe, a dry P-trap, or another sewage issue that may need you to contact your plumber.

Musty, earthy smell may be a sign of mould

Musty smells are often signs of mould or mildew growth in areas like basements, bathrooms, or behind furniture. Water stains or discoloured walls are indicators that shouldn’t be ignored. To treat the problem, use a remedy spray or vinegar solution, but keep yourself safe by wearing a mask and gloves. You can also call a plumber.

Fish smells point to electrical issues

While frying fish or cooking seafood may be exciting, its smell otherwise is quite unwelcome. Fish odour indicates a problem with electrical wiring, overloaded circuits, and other issues that shouldn’t be overlooked. Call an electrician immediately to address the problem.

Smoke or burning odour indicates fire risk

Do not ignore the smell of smoke or a burning odour, as it may point to a fire risk in your home. It’s best to quickly shut the main power if you smell something similar to burning plastic or electrical parts. This could be a short circuit or problems with electrical components. Call an electrician immediately in such cases.

Chemical smell indicates a refrigerant leak

If there’s a sweet, chemical-like smell in your home, consider it a red flag. It might point to a refrigerant leak from your air conditioner or HVAC system. It smells like paint thinner and shouldn’t be ignored. Another cause could be your cleaning products leaking where you store them. Inspect them to ensure there is no damage to the container or any spills.

Rotten smell signals a dead animal

If there's a smell of rot or decay, it indicates the death of an animal, whether it’s a bird or a mouse. They can enter the home, be trapped for days, and no one would know until their bodies begin to cause an unpleasant smell. Therefore, it’s essential to identify the source of the smell and clean the area. Seal the entry points to avoid future occurrences. To prevent the smell, open windows and spray air fresheners.
