In a surprising turn of events, a simple QR code has captured the attention of students and social media users across India. Just days after the CBSE Class 12 Mathematics exam made headlines for a viral QR code, YouTube India joined the story with its own twist.
The platform took to X and shared a QR code claiming to link to a “must watch video for students preparing for exams.”
Netizens expected it to be motivational or educational video. However, to their surprise, scanning the code did not lead to study material at all. Instead, it took viewers directly to Rick Astley’s 1987 hit song ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’, the same video that had earlier gone viral after appearing in the CBSE Class 12 maths exam.

As soon as YouTube India’s QR code circulated online, students and users responded quickly, pointing out YouTube’s jab at CBSE. One user wrote,“Haha, this QR code specially made for Mathematics exam.” Another added, “No CBSE is harmed.” One more wrote, “Why are you roasting CBSE.”
On 9 March 2026, CBSE conducted the Class 12 Mathematics examination across India. In a few sets of the question papers, a QR code printed on the front page unexpectedly redirected students to the Rick Astley music video instead of exam-related content.
The incident quickly drew attention online, as photos and videos of the question paper circulated on social media platforms.
Following the viral incident, CBSE issued a statement to reassure students and parents. The board explained that the QR code did not compromise exam security. They confirmed that the papers were authentic and safe for use. The official statement read, “On 09.03.2026, examination of Mathematics was conducted for class 12. In a few question paper sets, it appears that when one of the given QR codes is scanned, it links to a YouTube video. It appears that this has raised concerns about the veracity of the question papers amongst concerned students and their parents. It is hereby confirmed by the Board that the question papers are genuine. The security of the question papers remains uncompromised.”
The board added that it was reviewing the issue carefully and taking steps to prevent similar occurrences in future examinations.
