The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has responded to claims circulating on social media that a QR code printed on the Class 12 Mathematics board exam question paper redirected users to a YouTube video. The issue drew attention online after students shared videos showing the QR code being scanned.

The Class 12 Mathematics board examination was conducted on March 9 as part of the ongoing CBSE board exams for the 2026 academic session. Following the viral posts, questions were raised about the purpose of the QR code and whether the authenticity of the question paper had been affected.

What triggered the controversy

The controversy began after several social media posts showed students scanning a QR code printed on the question paper. According to the posts, the scan opened a YouTube video of the song Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley, a clip often associated with the internet prank known as “rickrolling.”

One widely shared video showed a student scanning the code after returning home from the examination centre. The clip quickly spread across platforms, leading to speculation and jokes online about how such a link could appear on an official exam paper.

Images of the question paper containing the QR code were also circulated online, further amplifying the discussion among students, parents and educators.

CBSE issues clarification

In a clarification, CBSE said that the question papers used during the examination were authentic and that the exam process remained secure. The board stated that QR codes are included in question papers as part of security mechanisms designed to verify the authenticity of exam material.

According to CBSE, these codes help officials identify and track question papers, especially in cases where exam leaks or unauthorised circulation are suspected.

The board acknowledged that in some instances scanning the QR code appeared to open a YouTube link. However, it stressed that the issue did not compromise the integrity or authenticity of the question papers used during the examination.

Board says matter under review

CBSE said the concerns raised by students and parents have been noted and the matter is being examined. The board added that necessary steps will be taken to ensure such confusion does not arise in future examinations. The CBSE Class 12 board exams began on February 17 and will continue until April 10.
