An abode adorned with plants and trees not only enhances aesthetic appeal and benefits the environment but also promotes physical and mental well-being. While large green spaces are rare in modern homes, plants can easily be incorporated into even the smallest living spaces. Yes, you heard that right — there are numerous creative ways to bring greenery into your cozy home.

Vertical gardens are an excellent solution for urban residents who have small spaces. They are not only a great way to use the available space but also improve the visual appeal and the air quality of your house, tells Amrita Gupta, Chief Interior Designer & Director of Manglam Group.

Gupta shares some creative ideas for vertical gardens to add greenery effectively to your small space:

Hanging planters: Planters can be suspended on the ceiling or balcony railings to make the most of the flooring space. Utilize a variety of plants that bloom and herbs to create a colourful and useful display.

Living walls: Install a living wall system with built-in irrigation. These systems can be used to house different plants and create a beautiful green canvas.

Wooden pallets: Another great way to create a vertical garden for small spaces is by reusing old wooden pallets. Fill them with soil, plant your favorite herbs and succulents, and lean them against a wall or fence in your balcony.

Ladder shelves: Use a wooden or a metal ladder to create a multi-tiered plant stand. Set up pots on each step to create an effect of greenery cascading down that is suitable for both outdoor and indoor areas.

Wall-mounted planters: Connect individual pots or planter boxes to the wall. This method is perfect for balconies or patios, common in many apartments.

Trellises and  climbers: Set up trellises to support climbing plants such as money plant or jasmine. These can be planted to cover walls or fences and add greenery,  without taking up the ground space.

Hanging bottles: This green option can add an interesting, modern twist and is a fantastic way of recycling materials. Recycle glass and plastic bottles by cutting them into half and making them into hanging planters. Get creative and colour them with paint pens and use stencils for design. You can also decorate it using charms, beads or ribbons.
