Pets bring joy into our lives and there’s a lot to love about them, but they also leave their hair on clothes and bedding, which can be quite frustrating to clean. It is difficult to get rid of the hair even after the clothes are given a good wash a couple of times. So what do you do? While there are many professional cleaning solutions, here’s what you can easily try at home.

Before washing the clothes

Use wet wipes or damp microfibre cloth

Make use of unscented, alcohol-free wet wipes to remove as much pet hair as you can. Avoid wet baby wipes with lotion, as they can leave stains on the fabric. Likewise, a damp microfibre cloth or rubber gloves can also help pick up loose hair.

Brush with a lint roller

While it may not get rid of all the hair, brushing with a lint roller can certainly reduce the amount of hair on the fabric before it goes in the washer. When combined with wet wipes or damp microfibre cloth, it can be more effective.

It is best not to go excessive and try to get every last hair out. This is because the wash and dry cycle take care of the rest.

In the washing cycle

Add wet wipes

Add 2 to 3 wet wipes into the washing drum directly, depending on the size of the load. Start the normal wash cycle. The wet wipes pick pet hair and stop them from transferring to other clothes. Remove the wipes covered with the pet hair after the wash and dispose of.

Use white vinegar

If not wet wipes, cleaning experts say that using vinegar is also effective in removing pet hair from your clothes. Add half a cup of white vinegar to your washing drum. This will loosen pet hair from the fabric and cut down on static, which makes the fur stick to clothing.

Additionally, pre-rinse also helps get rid of hair before the main wash. Avoid using hot water as the heat can make the pet hair go deeper into the fabric.

During and after drying

According to experts, it’s best to make the items go through a no-heat, only air cycle, which can help remove sticky hair. There are dryer sheets as well that help loosen hair and reduce static. Another way is to dry naturally by hanging your clothes, and removing any pet hair left with microfibre cloth, wet wipes, or lint roller.
