8 everyday cleaning items you don’t replace as often as you should

  • Replace pillows every 1-2 years and mattresses every 7-8 years for hygiene.
  • Bathroom brushes, loofahs, and sponges should be replaced every few months
  • Replace kitchen sponges, microfiber cloths, and plastic containers regularly.

For a healthy home, merely cleaning and organising household items may not be sufficient. There are certain everyday staples that are used but not replaced as often as they should be. The list includes cleaning supplies, mattresses, microfiber cloths, and more. Over time, they gather dust and bacteria and become unfit for use.

Household items that should be replaced more often

Experts say the following items should be replaced more often as they tend to become toxic with time. This also improves the health hygiene of your home, making it appear decluttered and cleaner.

Pillows

While pillow covers are often washed weekly, little attention is paid to pillows. Experts recommend replacing pillows every 1 to 2 years, including the decorative ones. These collect dead skin cells and bacteria over time, and may cause allergies and other skin issues.

Mattresses

Just like pillows, mattresses collect dust mites, bacteria, and fungus. This may not be good news for your skin. It may also worsen allergies and asthma. Thus, replacing your mattress every 7 to 8 years is ideal. Meanwhile, you can also vacuum your mattress, use protective covers, and wash your bedsheets and covers weekly to stay safe.

Bathroom essentials

Toilet brush

Often overlooked, toilet brush shouldn’t be kept for years. It needs replacement every 6 months to 1 year. For this, experts recommend checking the health of its bristles and odour. If either seems off, it must be replaced, as this indicates it is no longer effective at cleaning.”

Loofahs and sponges

Bathrooms are often damp places that invite bacteria and mould. For those who use loofahs and bath sponges, it may be a warning to replace them as frequently as every 3-4 weeks. These have the potential to cause skin allergies and infections that you’d want to totally avoid.

Kitchen supplies

Sponges

Just like loofahs, sponges tend to accumulate bacteria, mould, and mildew, making them unfit for long-term use. It is best to replace kitchen sponges every two weeks, but if you find an unpleasant odour, toss them right away.

Microfibre cloth

They are commonly used in every kitchen for a number of things, including dusting and cleaning surfaces. While they are washable, they need to be replaced after some time, as the fibres get damaged. The cloth doesn’t remain effective. Experts recommend replacing it every 6 to 12 months.

Plastic storage

Plastic storage containers are popular, but with time, they may also become home to bacteria and pose a safety risk. Thus, it’s advised to replace them every 6 months to 1 year. But if you find it looking worn out, you may discard it immediately.

Water filters

Water filters should ideally be replaced every two to six months. This depends on how often it is used and the quality of water you get in the area. Some of the signs may include reduced water pressure or unpleasant taste. It’s best to be consistent with replacement to avoid drinking contaminated water.
