Houseplants make any room look brighter and happier. Many people thus like to carefully pick varieties that are unique, even though they may cost more money. But it can be heart-breaking if they wilt or die. Hence, it’s always safe to consider options that can last for as long as 10 years or more.

While some of the best indoor plants can survive for decades with the right care, there are some which are more dependable than others. Here’s a list of the 9 longest living houseplants that won’t disappoint.

Snake plant

It has the most gorgeous upright leaves with dual-toned green colour that makes it unique. It doesn’t require high maintenance or frequent watering, and is tolerant of a wide range of environments. With adequate care, this plant can live for decades.

Rubber plant

It is a low-maintenance plant that lights up a space with its glossy leaves. It doesn’t require too much light or water. It also performs best when it’s not moved a lot. It is one plant that can outlast many with minimal care.

Spider plant

With their arching leaves, this plant is a beauty when placed indoors. But they can easily dry out due to a lack of water. With adequate care, they can last for decades, with some of them living well up to 50 years. Trim leaves or take the small offshoots and root them in soil or water to prolong their life.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera can last for decades and requires very little maintenance and attention other than occasional watering. It is the most versatile plant that is known for its medicinal uses. It’s best to prune timely as its leaves can become hazardous.

Jade plant

They are among the longest living houseplants that do well indoors with little light and watering, but they thrive best in direct sunlight. They can even flower when grown on a balcony or terrace. People often keep this plant in their homes and offices as it is also considered a symbol of luck.

Wax plant

Wax plants are known for their fragrant flowers, which grow in rounded clusters. They thrive in moist, well-draining soil and bright, indirect light. Their woody stems and glossy, evergreen leaves make them a beautiful addition to any home.

Philodendron

Philodendrons stand out for their beautiful heart-shaped leaves which instantly elevate any space. They are an ideal choice for indoor spaces, as they are low-maintenance and need only bright, indirect light. With proper care, they can last for decades.

Ivy

They look pretty with their dual-toned green shade and live for well over a decade. They are not high-maintenance and require little light and watering. If leaves turn yellow, it's a sign for repotting. It is the easiest plant to take care of.
