Bathrooms in most Indian homes are functional spaces — compact, tiled, poorly ventilated and often without natural light. Yet, adding a touch of green can instantly soften the look, improve the ambience, and even make the room feel fresher. The good news? Several hardy indoor plants not only survive but thrive in low-light, high-humidity bathrooms. These varieties that love moisture are very suitable for living in apartments, rental houses, powder rooms, or even in a bathroom without a window.

We have listed eight low-maintenance plants that can thrive in humid and enclosed bathroom areas:

ZZ Plant

ZZ plant is the most durable houseplant among others; it easily takes the dim corners of the house and irregular watering. The plant has thick rhizomes that store water, hence it tolerates moisture in the soil, which stays longer in bathrooms. It should be kept in a pot that allows drainage of water and should not be overwatered.

Snake Plant

Snake Plant, often called the "unkillable" houseplant, tolerates almost all - low light, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. Plus, it contributes to the enhancement of indoor air quality.

Heartleaf Philodendron

This trailing, tropical plant loves warmth and humidity. It grows well on shelves or in hanging planters. Though it tolerates low light, a brief rotation to brighter areas every few weeks keeps leaves glossy and healthy.

Pothos (Devil’s Ivy)

One of the most popular indoor plants in India, Pothos thrives in steamy bathrooms and can grow in soil or water. It’s low maintenance and forgiving if you forget to water. In windowless spaces, moving it to indirect light occasionally keeps growth steady.

Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

Aglaonema is known for its colourful, variegated leaves and ability to handle low light. Warm, humid air actually helps it thrive, making it an excellent choice for tiled bathrooms or vanity corners.

Cast Iron Plant

True to its name, this is a “tough-as-nails” plant that handles neglect extremely well. It endures low light, rare watering, and poor ventilation, making it a fit for the most difficult bathroom conditions.

Lucky Bamboo

In case your choice is a minimalist design, Lucky Bamboo will grow wonderfully in vases filled with water. It is capable of flourishing in low or artificial light and only requires very little water changes — ideal for small or disorganised bathrooms.

Moss

For a unique, zen-like touch, moss trays are ideal for very damp, windowless bathrooms. They need no soil and minimal care, thriving in constant humidity.
