Have you ever had a hair treatment, expecting healthy and stylish results, only to find your hair dull and lifeless after a few weeks? You might start wondering what went wrong. The truth is, it’s not just the treatment that matters; it’s the preparation beforehand. Without understanding your hair type and its needs, even the best treatments can fall short, leaving you disappointed.

Choosing the right hair treatment is more than chasing trends or indulging in salon luxuries. You have to know your hair type well. According to Vaishakhi Haria, educator, hair stylist and director of Splash salon, your hair has its unique characteristics and needs and it is important to understand it well before opting for treatments. “A treatment that works wonders for one person might wreak havoc on someone else's hair. That's why it's important to match your hair type with the appropriate treatment, considering factors like texture, porosity, and even scalp health,” she says.

Haria shares tips on how to choose the right treatment for the long-term health and vitality of your mane:

Consultation: Avoid falling for hard-selling tactics and instead, engage in a thorough consultation with a trusted stylist who prioritises your needs and goals.

Learn more: Always dig a little more. It is essential to have some basic knowledge about the products being used on your hair. Understanding the ingredients and their effects will help you to make informed decision about what’s best for your hair type.

Don’t fall for packaging: Just because the packaging looks fancy, doesn’t mean the product inside will work for you. Rely on professional guidance to choose products that are genuinely suitable for your hair's specific needs rather than being swayed by attractive packaging.

Peer pressure: You may want to try a treatment because it worked for a friend. However, what works for one person may not necessarily be suitable for everyone. Prioritise treatments that align with your individual hair needs rather than succumbing to external influences.

End results: Before committing to any treatment, be clear about the final results you desire. Sometimes, treatments can have unexpected outcomes, and you may end up with a look that isn’t what you anticipated, such as flat or lifeless hair.

Validity: All treatments have different validity periods, with some wearing off after just 2-3 washes. It’s important to ask your stylist about the longevity of the treatment to ensure it meets your expectations and lifestyle requirements.
