  • Breast cancer is now the most common cancer among Indian women.
  • Early detection and screening can save thousands of lives.
  • Lifestyle choices and HPV vaccination help reduce cancer risks.

For generations, women have placed the needs of their families ahead of their own wellbeing, brushing aside fatigue, discomfort, and even warning signs of illness. The International Women's Day serves as a timely reminder that caring for oneself is not an act of indulgence but one of responsibility.

In that sense, awareness about cancer screening, prevention, and early detection becomes not just a medical message, but a powerful statement of self-respect and resilience.

Cancer continues to pose one of the most serious health challenges for women in India. From breast and cervical cancers to ovarian and thyroid cancers, the threat is real, but so is hope. Doctors say awareness, prevention, and early detection can save thousands of lives.

According to Dr Akshat Malik, Senior Consultant, Head & Neck Oncology, Apollo Hospital, Delhi, cancer remains one of the most pressing health threats facing women today. “Breast cancerhas now become the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Indian women,” he says. What troubles doctors most is the age at which it appears. “Unlike in many Western countries, Indian women are being diagnosed in their 30s and 40s, a stage of life filled with responsibilities, ambition and family,” adds Dr Malik.

Speaking about the various cancers, Dr Malik says, “Cervical cancer, despite being almost entirely preventable, continues to take thousands of lives every year. Ovarian cancer, often described as a silent killer, is frequently detected only when the disease has already advanced,” Dr Malik informs.

He adds, “Another growing concern is thyroid cancer, which affects women nearly three times more often than men. However, thyroid cancer is also among the most treatable cancers when caught early.”

Types of cancers women must not ignore

Dr Malik shares the types of cancers women must not ignore:

Breast cancer: It remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Indian women. What makes it more worrying is the younger age of onset. Regular breast examinations and timely mammography can detect abnormalities early, when treatment is far more effective.

Cervical cancer: Cervical cancer stands as one of the few cancers that can largely be prevented through routine screening and vaccination. However, lack of awareness means many women never undergo a Pap smear or HPV test, missing the chance to catch precancerous changes early.

Ovarian cancer: Ovarian cancer rarely announces itself loudly. Symptoms can be vague, and can include bloating, discomfort, or unexplained fatigue, and often ignored. Because it is frequently diagnosed late, doctors urge women to pay closer attention to subtle but persistent bodily changes.

Thyroid cancer: Increasingly, thyroid cancer is being detected among women. Doctors advise that symptoms such as a lump in the neck, persistent hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing should never be brushed aside. Simple tests like ultrasound and blood investigations can help identify problems early.

Early detection can save lives

Doctors stress that early detection dramatically improves survival rates. Women above 40 should undergo regular clinical breast examinations and mammography. Screening for cervical cancer, beginning between 25 and 30, through Pap smear or HPV testing, remains one of the most effective safeguards.

Prevention with everyday choices

Lifestyle choices play a powerful role in cancer prevention. Avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating fruit- and vegetable-rich diets, limiting alcohol, and receiving the HPV vaccine during adolescence can help reduce cancer risks.
