When it comes to staying healthy, which includes being disease-free, many people rely on popular concoctions and consider them magic potions. However, they often overlook the harder part: the right diet, lifestyle habits, workout routine, and adequate sleep for recovery.

A Delhi-based cardiologist, Dr Shailesh Singh, took to his X account to mock the claim that ‘karela juice’ can reverse diabetes naturally, adding that it’s not enough to do the trick and that the equation involves several other factors people often choose to ignore.

Dr Singh went on to mention what actually helps people manage diabetes better. He shared that the friend who ‘reversed diabetes naturally’ forgot to mention that he:

  • Lost 20 kg
  • Walked 10 km daily
  • Slept 8 hours
  • Exercised 1 hour daily
  • Quit alcohol

“But sure, it was the karela juice that did it. We love magic cures more than mathematical ones,” he added.

Benefits of walking and workout for diabetes patients

Walking and exercising both have several health benefits for diabetes patients, as they help keep blood glucose levels in check and improve insulin sensitivity. Moreover, movement of any kind is good for heart health and metabolism. It becomes easier to manage weight and blood pressure. Further, it helps enhance mood and keeps you alert and focused.

The best time to walk or work out for diabetes patients is one to three hours after eating when the blood sugar level is likely to be higher. It’s said that 150 minutes of moderate-intensity workout each week can help manage the disease effectively.

Alcohol and its impact on blood sugar levels

Dr Shailesh Singh mentioned quitting alcohol as one of the moves to reverse diabetes. Alcohol consumption can make controlling blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity more difficult. An NIH-reviewed study revealed that excessive alcohol intake was linked to poorer blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes, whereas cutting down or quitting alcohol led to improved insulin sensitivity and fasting glucose levels.

Similarly, quality sleep is important for patients with diabetes to maintain steady health. Eventually, it is a combination of lifestyle factors that need to be worked upon rather than relying on any magical drink to cure the disease.
