Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterised by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, and constipation. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of abnormal gut motility, increased sensitivity to pain, and imbalances in gut bacteria.

For managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), probiotics can be a helpful addition to your treatment plan. They work by restoring the balance of gut bacteria, which can be disrupted in IBS. Probiotics are living microorganisms that can offer health benefits when taken in adequate amounts. Certain probiotic strains, such as Bifidobacterium infantis and lactobacillus plantarum, have been shown to reduce IBS symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements. Probiotics can also enhance the gut’s immune response and improve the integrity of the gut lining, further aiding in symptom relief. While not a cure, probiotics can be a valuable part of managing IBS. Here are some probiotics that are commonly recommended for IBS, according to Dr Sandeep Kumar, Senior Gastroenterologist at IRS Healthcare, Agra:

Bifidobacterium infantis: This strain has been shown to help with abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel movement issues. It’s commonly found in products like Align.

Lactobacillus plantarum: Known for reducing abdominal pain and bloating, this strain is found in several probiotic supplements, including products like Probiotic 30 Billion.

Bifidobacterium bifidum: This strain helps maintain the balance of good bacteria in the gut and can alleviate some IBS symptoms, such as diarrhoea and constipation.

Lactobacillus acidophilus: Commonly found in yoghurt and supplements, this strain helps reduce IBS symptoms, especially in people with diarrhoea-predominant IBS.

Saccharomyces boulardii: This beneficial yeast can help manage diarrhoea, a common symptom of IBS.

VSL#3: This is a high-potency probiotic blend containing multiple strains, often recommended for IBS, particularly for those with more severe symptoms.

Bacillus coagulans: Found in some probiotic supplements, this strain has shown promise in reducing IBS symptoms, particularly in relieving gas and bloating.

Tips for choosing probiotics:

Look for high-quality probiotics with multiple strains that are known to benefit gut health.

Start with a lower dose and gradually increase it to avoid any initial discomfort.

Consult with a healthcare provider to find the right probiotic for your specific IBS symptoms.

Remember, probiotics may work differently for each individual, so it might take some time to find the one that works best for you.
