Arthritis is one of the common diseases affecting many. It causes pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints. While controlling arthritis can be challenging at times, proper knowledge and strategies can significantly reduce suffering and improve quality of life.
Common symptoms of this condition include joint pain and tenderness, swelling, stiffness, and restricted movement in the affected joints. You may experience pain even when you haven’t been active for a long period. Additionally, fatigue and malaise can make everyday tasks challenging.

Managing arthritis can help relieve your symptoms, allowing you to engage in the activities that matter most to you. It can also assist in managing other chronic conditions you may have, such as diabetes, heart disease, or obesity, suggests the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It recommends the following tips to help deal with the symptoms:

  • Get moving and stay active: Keep moving, your joints will thank you. Studies show that exercise can reduce pain, improve functional ability, and delay later impairments caused by arthritis. Aim for at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate activity each week, most commonly, fast walking or cycling. You can do it all in one session or break it up into 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Make it a social activity by joining a local walking group.

  • Maintain a healthy weight: Keeping a healthy weight can slow the progression of arthritic symptoms, allowing you to continue enjoying your favourite activities. Even a small weight loss, such as 5 percent of your body weight (about 12 pounds for a 250-pound person), can significantly lessen pain and improve mobility. Preparing meals with your family can make this process healthy, fun, and rewarding, while also relieving pressure on your joints.

  • Consult your physician: If you suspect you have arthritis, particularly inflammatory, seek early treatment. Your physician can guide you on how to manage your condition appropriately. They can also recommend specific exercises and treatments for your situation. In cases like rheumatoid arthritis, they may prescribe medication. Remember, they are there to help you, so don’t hesitate to share any aches or pains.

  • Take care of your joints: Protecting your joints can help prevent the development of osteoarthritis or worsening existing conditions. Be cautious in workplaces and during hobbies that involve repetitive motions, such as frequent bending of the knees. Using incorrect techniques and overexerting yourself without breaks can lead to injuries and long-term damage. Including stretching or strengthening exercises can enhance joint support.
