PCOS can cause insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems in addition to difficulties with pregnancy. Three criteria are usually required for a diagnosis to be made. Polycystic ovaries identified by ultrasonography, high testosterone levels, and irregular menstruation patterns.

These criteria highlight the complex nature of this disorder and its effects on reproductive health as well as general well-being.

Menstrual irregularity and physical discomfort

Menstrual irregularities brought on by PCOS can cause a variety of internal discomforts, such as irregular cycles, painful periods, and recurrent spotting, says Dr Astha Dayal, lead consultant, obstetrics & gynaecology, CK Birla hospital Gurugram.

These symptoms cause discomfort and uncertainty in addition to disrupting with everyday activities. Additionally, the mental stress that accompanies premenstrual syndrome aggravates these physical difficulties, exacerbating the impact on women's general health.

Weight management challenges

According to Dayal, a key challenge for people with PCOS is weight gain and the battle to lose weight. Even with persistent efforts at exercise and dieting, it can be quite frustrating to not see the results you want. The discrepancy between the work put in and the outcomes obtained can cause demotivation and self-doubt, which can have an adverse effect on one's mental and emotional well-being.

Emotional distress and infertility

One common side effect of PCOS is infertility, which brings with it difficult mental issues, says Dayal. Deep emotional discomfort might result from the desire for a child combined with the uncertainty and depression of failed attempts. Infertility-related social pressure and stigma also worsen feelings of loneliness and inadequacy in women, which lowers their quality of life.

Skin, hair, and body issues

Skin and hair disorders associated with PCOS, such as acne, hair loss, and atypical hair development, exacerbate issues with self-esteem and body image, says Dayal. These visible signs of the illness can cause emotions of shame and self-consciousness, which can affect confidence levels and social relationships. The persistent nature of these symptoms, even with management attempts, frequently results in irritation and disappointment with one's appearance.

Long term health implications

The long-term health consequences of PCOS, including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, weigh large over the prospects for women. Being aware of these possible consequences makes one cautious and anxious, which calls for the adoption of preventative health management techniques. Furthermore, the overall impact of these health issues on day-to-day functioning emphasises how critical early intervention and long-term lifestyle modifications are.

A lifetime commitment to lifestyle adjustments, such as dietary adjustments, consistent exercise, and stress reduction methods, is necessary to control PCOS. To preserve both physical and mental well-being while managing the challenges presented by PCOS, one must learn to be resilient and adaptable. Seeking assistance from peers and loved ones as well as working closely with healthcare professionals can help give the resources and motivation needed to continue these efforts over time.
