During the monsoon, you might notice your baby struggling with symptoms like a runny nose, coughing, or a fever. These signs can be troubling and often come with the season. The rainy season brings more moisture and standing water, which can help germs and mold grow. These conditions can lead to respiratory infections and other health issues in children.
The increased humidity and wet conditions create a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria, leading to colds, flu, and other infections, warns Dr Pradeep Jain, pediatrician at Vatsalya Child Care in Jodhpur. “This season can significantly impact young children’s health. It's vital for parents to be vigilant and proactive," he adds.
Dr Jain suggests implementing these simple preventive measures, you can safeguard your child's well-being and prevent common illnesses associated with this time of year.
Hygiene: Wash your child's hands frequently with soap and water to prevent the spread of germs. Make sure they wash up before eating and after playing outside.
Proper clothing: Dress your child in breathable, moisture-wicking clothes. For infants, use waterproof ponchos or baby suits to keep them dry during rain. These options are more suitable than traditional raincoats.
Keep mosquitoes away: Prevent mosquito bites by using repellent on their skin and clothes. Keep windows and doors closed or screened to keep mosquitoes out. These steps can greatly reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Safe drinking water: Ensure your child drinks clean, filtered water. Use a purifier to keep water safe from contamination.
Vaccinations: Keep your child’s vaccinations up to date to protect against illnesses that are common during the monsoon season. Check with your pediatrician to ensure they have all necessary shots.
Indoor air quality: Maintain a clean indoor environment. Use dehumidifiers to control moisture and prevent mold growth. Keep rooms well-ventilated.
Balanced diet: Feed your child a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Foods like oranges and spinach can help boost their immune system.
Avoid crowded places: Try to avoid taking your child to crowded places where they might catch infections. If you do go out, make sure the area is well-ventilated and your child avoids close contact with others who are sick.
